Overview
Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer for Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C., is hiring an Apprentice Technician for our Heavy Equipment, Rental, and Power Systems operations in Suffolk, Virginia. We service the full Caterpillar product line, including earthmoving equipment, mining, forestry, generators, engines and more. This 15-month Apprenticeship Program is open to individuals with a strong mechanical aptitude who are graduating high school, veterans exiting the military, or technicians seeking to transition from other mechanical fields such as automotive or HVAC.
A High School diploma or GED is required; completion of a Mechanical VoTech program is preferred.
This program provides training to pave the way to a Caterpillar technician career path. You will learn to troubleshoot and diagnose diesel equipment problems, perform repairs, recondition and service heavy equipment and components, while being paid with full-time benefits and no education expenses. Carter offers multiple shift opportunities in many locations, including some 3-day/week and 4-day/week options. Upon completion, you’ll be equipped to continue building your skill set and advancing your technician career.
Responsibilities/ Qualifications
Requirements for the Caterpillar Apprentice Technician position include:
- Self-starter able to work with limited supervision and meet deadlines.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and excellent troubleshooting skills.
- Proficient in computer use, Microsoft Office products and service software; able to complete service reports and provide pertinent details for work orders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to write service reports that document diagnosis and repairs. Must prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and time cards accurately and timely.
- Must be able to read and understand operating manuals.
- Must be able to occasionally operate heavy equipment.
- Must be self-directed, organized, able to interact with coworkers, and work as part of a team.
- Must have an excellent driving record.
- Must be able to work all shifts and overtime as needed to meet customer needs.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift, carry and maneuver items up to 70 pounds, including bulky objects. The job requires repeated reaching, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending and climbing beside, onto and under heavy equipment. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Additional duties may be assigned.
Advancement & AccreditationUpon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will receive an accreditation from the Virginia Department of Labor, becoming a certified Construction Equipment Technician. Carter's Apprenticeship Program is nationally recognized by the Federal Department of Labor and fully accredited through the Commonwealth of Virginia.
