Overview

Assistant Wrestling Coach role at Suffolk Public Schools.

Qualifications
  • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport. (Major sports)
  • The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
Reports To

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Supervises

In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Job Goal

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach should model socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations and consultation.

General
  • The success of athletic programs influences the community's image; public exposure and expectations for winning must not override good sportsmanship and good mental health.
  • The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury and due process considerations.
  • The job description provides guidance; when not specifically covered, a coach should exercise common sense and good judgment.
  • The position is evaluated yearly and may be renewed for the upcoming school year.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Has thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Suffolk Public Schools Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the team’s staff.
  • Knows existing system, state and league regulations; implements and interprets them for staff.
  • Understands the proper administrative chain of command and refers requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all required meetings.
Staff Responsibilities
  • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques taught by assistants. Plans conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff; encourages professional growth through clinic attendance.
  • Delegates duties, supervises implementation and evaluates assistants at season end.
  • Maintains discipline, resolves grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned by the athletic director/principal.
Administrative Duties
  • Assists the athletic director with scheduling, transportation and requirements for tournament and special events.
  • Assists in preparing for scheduled sport events or practices and coordinates with maintenance and school staff; adheres to facility times.
  • Provides documentation for state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Provides safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment and sites.
  • Advises the athletic director and recommends policy or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
  • Serves as a mentor to promote character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
  • Monitors athletes’ grades and conduct.
  • Provides guidance and safeguards for participants during practices, games and travel.
  • Provides training rules, schedules and regulations to athletes and parents.
  • Follows programs concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies; directs SPS Trainer to complete paperwork on injuries within 24 hours.
  • Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
  • Determines discipline and communicates with parents and Athletic Director when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assists athletes in college or advanced education selection.
Finance, Facility And Equipment
  • Participates in budgeting with the athletic director; recommends equipment guidelines.
