Position

JV Cheer Coach

Qualifications
  • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport. (Major sports)
  • The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
Reports To

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Supervises

In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Job Goal

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach should also model behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. The coach should upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.

General
  • The success of athletic programs influences the community’s image of the system; public exposure is a responsibility, and expectations for winning must not override objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.
  • The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process considerations.
  • The job description aims to provide sufficient guidance; where not specifically covered, a coach should exercise common sense and good judgment.
  • The position is evaluated yearly and may be renewed for the upcoming school year.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Has thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Suffolk Public Schools Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the team’s staff.
  • Understands and interprets existing system, state and league regulations for staff and teams.
  • Follows proper administrative line of command and routes requests or grievances through proper channels; attends required meetings.
Staff Responsibilities
  • Establishes fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by assistants; designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by supporting clinic attendance.
  • Delegates duties, supervises implementation and evaluates staff effectiveness at season’s end.
  • Maintains discipline, resolves grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
Administrative Duties
  • Assists the athletic director in scheduling, transportation and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Assists in preparations for events and practices and ensures facility times are observed; coordinates with maintenance and school staff.
  • Provides documentation for state and system requirements concerning medical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Ensures safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment and sites.
  • Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, methods or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
  • Serves as a mentor to promote character development (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship).
  • Monitors student-athletes’ grades and conduct.
  • Provides guidance and safeguards at practices, games and travel.
  • Distributes training rules, schedules and regulations to athletes and parents.
  • Follows procedures for injuries, medical attention and emergencies; coordinates with SPS Trainer for injury paperwork.
  • Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
