Position summary and duties for the Varsity Girls Tennis coach role.

Overview

The head coach is responsible for organizing and supervising a total sports program, applying knowledge of the sport, guiding student athletes, and maintaining sportsmanship and character development. The coach should stay informed on technical aspects and new theories and procedures relevant to the field, serve as a positive role model, and work within the school system to deliver a quality athletic program.

Responsibilities

and duties
  • Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Suffolk Public Schools Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the team’s staff.
  • Knows existing system, state and league regulations; implements and interprets them for staff.
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers requests or grievances through proper channels. Attends required public/staff/departmental meetings.
  • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by assistants. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by promoting clinic attendance.
  • Delegates duties, supervises implementation and evaluates staff effectiveness.
  • Maintains discipline, handles grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
  • Assists in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournament and special events; coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provides documentation to meet state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Safeguards maintenance and protection of equipment and facilities; ensures proper inventory and reconditioning as needed.
  • Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, method or procedural changes.
  • Mentors athletes to promote character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship; monitors grades and conduct.
  • Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians; enforces discipline and conveys policies to participants and parents as necessary.
  • Assists athletes in college or advanced education planning.
Qualifications
  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sports).
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport; continues to study new theories and procedures relevant to the field.
  • Ability to serve as an appropriate role model for student-athletes through instructions and actions.
Reports to

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Supervises

Head coach advises, coordinates and supports a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Job goal

Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy and physical training for individual and team success; promote socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence and pride of accomplishment. Upgrade knowledge through coaching clinics, observations, consultations, etc.

General considerations
  • Athletic programs influence the community’s image; emphasize good sportsmanship and mental health over winning.
  • Position may include extended time, risk of injury and due process considerations.
  • Coaches should exercise common sense and good judgment when not specifically covered by policy.
  • Position is evaluated yearly and renewed for the upcoming school year based on recommendation.
Administrative duties
  • Assist in scheduling, transportation and requirements for tournaments and events; coordinate with maintenance and school staff.
  • Prepare documentation for physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility; ensure safety and compliance.
