Overview
Girls JV Volleyball Coach role at Suffolk Public Schools. This position involves directing a high school girls' varsity/junior varsity volleyball program, developing student athletes, and supporting school athletic objectives.
Qualifications- Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
- The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
- The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.
SupervisesIn several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.
Job GoalTo instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach should also demonstrate and promote behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
General- The success of athletic programs influences the community’s image of the school system. Public exposure carries responsibility; while recognizing the importance of winning, objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health must be maintained.
- The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process considerations.
- The job description provides guidance to function; in cases not covered, coaches should exercise common sense and good judgment. The position is evaluated yearly and may be renewed for the upcoming school year.
- Knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Suffolk Public Schools’ Board of Education and responsibility for their implementation by the team’s staff of the sports program.
- Knowledge of existing systems, state and league regulations; implement and interpret them for staff.
- Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels. Be aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings requiring attendance.
- Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by assistants. Design conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
- Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth by promoting clinic attendance.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation and, at season’s end, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants.
- Maintain discipline, address grievances and work to increase morale and cooperation.
- Perform other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
- Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
- Assist in preparation for scheduled events or practices and coordinate with maintenance and school staff.
- Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
- Provide safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment and facilities.
- Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method or procedural changes.
- Mentor each athlete to promote character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Monitor student athletes’ grades and conduct.
- Be present at practices, games, and travel to provide guidance and safeguards for participants.
- Communicate training rules, schedules, and regulations to athletes and parents.
- Follow programs concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies.
