Job Overview

The Teacher Special Education Elementary RDSPD will provide direct classroom instruction in academic, behavior, social and self‑care, consistent with requirements of state and federal laws as specified in each student’s Individual Education Plan for the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct instructional services that are appropriate and consistent with goals in a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and with state and federal law
  • Collaborate with parents, students, and school/community personnel to develop clear, measurable IEP goals and objectives aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
  • Apply knowledge of human development and disabilities to plan and implement an appropriate curriculum with necessary accommodations, modifications, and adaptations
  • Prepare lesson plans that are developmentally and age‑appropriate based on the student’s IEP
  • Prepare and organize materials for daily lesson implementation
  • Use appropriate adaptive equipment and assistive technology as recommended by related service providers to meet student needs
  • Fully implement students’ IEPs, including behavior intervention plans and accommodations/modifications of materials and curriculum
  • Provide for basic student needs, including toileting, feeding, and caring for students who are unable to care for themselves
Compliance
  • Safeguard confidentiality of students with disabilities
  • Use assessment procedures to determine students’ current academic and functional levels, progress, and document ongoing progress with accurate records
  • Collaborate with staff to meet campus, district, and program timelines
Program Support
  • Direct the activities of an educational aide or interpreter of the deaf
  • Participate in or prepare paperwork for Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings
  • Support student services provided at the campus level for students in the RDSPD
  • Provide direction, consultation, and training for campus staff and parents regarding the unique instructional needs of deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students
  • Work with program administration to plan and provide RDSPD information to parents and campus staff
  • Collaborate with RDSPD support staff and administrative staff to meet student needs
  • Participate in campus, district, and program training and professional development
Supervisory Responsibilities

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Deaf Education or related field
  • Master’s Degree in Deaf Education or related field preferred
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certification for Teacher of the Deaf
  • Valid Teaching Certification issued by the Texas Education Agency appropriate to the subject and grade level, or demonstration of competency through the 2010‑2011 High Objective Uniform State Standard of Evaluation (HOUSSE)
  • De‑Escalation/Restraint Certification – district‑provided training required within 30 days of instruction
  • Assessment of Sign Communication (TASC) for Total Communication Classroom Environments required within 1 year
  • Experience preferred but not required
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on student needs and abilities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents
  • Excellent oral, written, and sign communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate technology equipment and software programs
  • Proven ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

The work environment includes classrooms, offices, work stations, and meeting rooms. The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying items weighing less than 40 lb. The employee regularly uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Required vision includes close and color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
