The Driver Bus PT will provide safe, efficient, and reliable transportation service by operating various school buses in transporting pupils to and from school as well as related activities while maintaining a harmonious relation with transportation staff, district administrators, teachers, coaches and community members.
Position DescriptionEssential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operation: Transport students over assigned route, observing all traffic laws and safety regulations in accordance with state and federal laws and Fort Bend ISD Policies & Procedures; operate school bus in a safe manner; perform vehicle pre- and post-trip inspections; report accidents or maintenance issues; adhere to route directions and schedules; keep the interior of the vehicle clean; assist passengers during emergencies;
provide assistance for students on and off the bus, including special education students; operate wheelchair lift equipment and assist with safety equipment as needed; demonstrate punctuality and reliability by regular attendance. - Administrative: Communicate effectively with parents, students, and administrators; complete required paperwork (route changes, vehicle repairs, head counts) and submit timely; administer and enforce student discipline per policies; read and interpret route directions and maps; attend training for caring for special education students requiring critical care services; attend in-services, safety meetings, and training; maintain cooperative attitude with staff, parents, and administrators; report difficulties or changes in students to the Area Supervisor;
adhere to IEP documents and confidentiality; maintain the special needs bus binder with up-to-date route and ridership information. - Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

- High School diploma or GED preferred
- Texas CDL Driver's License, Class A or B, with P and S endorsements
- Texas School Bus Driver Certification; must be enrolled in first available certification class
- Pass an Annual Physical per DOT Pre-Employment Physical & Drug/Alcohol test
- Crisis Prevention Intervention Certification; obtain within 30 days of hire (district-provided training); required for Special Education Drivers Only
- Acceptable driving record based on TEA regulations/standards
- Minimum of 1 year experience as a commercial driver preferred
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Tact and diplomacy in dealing with students, parents, and school personnel
- Ability to manage behavior of students with special needs
- Ability to operate special education equipment and secure passengers using safety equipment
- Ability to assist Special Education students into and out of seating and bus transportation
- Ability to pull/push and secure wheelchairs using tie-down straps
- Prior experience with special needs (preferred for special needs position)

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds; frequent use of hands and arms;
close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work may involve irregular hours and safety risks when operating equipment and transporting students.
- Conditions include operating in inclement weather, heat and humidity, exposure to dust and traffic fumes, and potential risk of injury due to traffic accidents.
- Must be physically capable of climbing in and out of the bus and evacuating through emergency doors during drills or emergencies; may involve travel to various campuses and occasional evening/weekend work.
