The Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Technician II monitors the solar and energy storage farm’s availability and ensures mechanical and electrical maintenance is performed when necessary to maintain established safety and operating targets. The role executes daily scheduling philosophy utilizing a prioritized list of work provided by planning, with a focus on maximizing generation and ensuring proactive work is prioritized and completed.
RoleResponsibilities
- Test, maintain, and troubleshoot solar PV & battery storage electrical equipment
- Ensure all assigned maintenance tasks are performed safely and in accordance with site operating procedures for Storage/Solar PV sites
- Complete Lock‑Out‑Tag‑Out (LOTO), JSA’s, Permit to Work, and job‑specific documentation required for safe maintenance and repairs
- Proactively identify improvement opportunities in job‑appropriate processes and procedures
- Collect data and prepare reports to meet reporting requirements
- Perform balance of plant and switchyard work as required
- Maintain BESS, trackers, inverters, and other PV electrical equipment as assigned by the Site Supervisor or Lead
- Monitor maintenance contractors’ activities and ensure corrective actions where appropriate
- Perform current and voltage readings as necessary
- Document all work and generate reports as required
- Identify gaps in safety standards and potential safety risks in the environment
- Assist with BOP activities when needed
- Use available tools to monitor energy output and respond quickly to emergencies or situations requiring immediate troubleshooting and corrective actions
- Enforce site protocols, including site access, HSE, security, deliveries, and inspections
- Interface with third‑party contractors working at the facilities
- Respond to nontraditional operating hours for operations, maintenance, and emergent issues, including execution of maintenance, work order tracking, and resolution of O&M issues
- Perform all other duties as assigned
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Associate degree in engineering or related science from an accredited U.S. school, other than correspondence or internet preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of work experience in operations and maintenance of power generation, transmission, and distribution; preference for renewable energy experience, preferably solar and battery storage
- Unrestricted driver’s license in good standing required
- Willing to relocate within a 1‑hour drive of the site
- Skilled in at least one of the following: power plant operations, electrical, and mechanical equipment maintenance; substations maintenance; power plant safety protocols
- Work in extreme weather conditions
- Ability to walk, climb, and stand extensively during the workday
- Knowledge of hand and power tools
- Knowledge of environmental and safety policies and procedures
- Ability to work within tight deadlines
- Willingness to travel to and from job sites as assigned
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to push/pull/lift tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs
- Routine operation of a computer/tablet and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and a computer printer
- Frequent oral and written communication skills
- Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required
- Complete all required training in a satisfactory manner and timeframe
- First aid/CPR/AED preferred
- OSHA Certified preferred
- HVAC Certified preferred
- Shift work
- Must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time
- Must pass physical fitness tests required for the company
- Ability and willingness to travel to and from job sites as assigned, including supporting other sites
- Ability to work in varying climates as required
- Must live within a 1‑hour drive from the site unless agreed by HR and the hiring manager
- This position is a combined field and office‑based role with some travel and visits to other RWECE office and field locations
