Job Description

The Field Technician is responsible for accessing the daily schedule prior to starting their day. Local travel within a strategic geographical area is required to successfully perform the scheduled tests for the day. The Field Technician is required to be at their first testing location by 8:30am, unless specific circumstances require an earlier start time, or an approved delayed start is necessary.

The process of conducting Energy Code compliance testing involves the use of industry specific equipment known as a Blower Door and Duct Blaster. These tools require technical training and proper setup. All training and equipment are provided by Performance Point. Upon arrival at the testing locations, the Field Technician must have access into the house and must determine a source of electrical power needed to operate the equipment.

A brief walk‑through is necessary to assess the house’s readiness for testing. This process includes, but is not limited to, closing all exterior doors and windows, gaining access to every room within the home, and a visual inspection of the heating and air conditioning system. Duct testing requires locating and sealing‑off every HVAC opening (supply and return vent), in most cases using a ladder to reach overhead vents in ceilings.

Upon completion of the tests, the results will be loaded into our software program, Rater Helper. This software will compute the results to determine if the testing has passed or failed. A passed test will end with the posting of an Energy Code certificate for the customer (the Construction Manager) to present to their Building Code Inspector. A failed test will end with a brief investigation into why the testing failed and a detailed report for the customer documenting the failed result and an explanation as to why.

Although the Field Technician will always be inside a house during testing, there will often be times when there is no heat or air conditioning within the testing location. Therefore, it must be understood and expected that the Field Technician will be exposed to a variety of environmental situations, such as extreme heat and cold, and access to testing locations may require exposure to rain and other elements.

Along with these climate related factors, the Field Technician will be faced with other common hazards found on construction sites, such as uneven surfaces, sharp objects, etc.

The Field Technician role at Performance Point is the starting point on the path towards a certified Energy Rater. Along that path there will be challenges and opportunities to assist other team members with more advanced services, such as HERS ratings, Green Building Verification, consulting with customers on attaining Energy Star certification, and other energy efficiency goals. Other opportunities for career development, such as Air sealing, Pre‑drywall and Framing inspections all come with technical certification achievement, and with the right attitude, determination, and commitment, these next step…
