Responsibilities

The Nurse Manager is responsible for managing, directing and coordinating the delivery of care for an assigned patient treatment unit(s) in accordance with the established standards of care, mental health practice, and hospital policy, goals and objectives. This position assists in contributing to the hospital’s mission, objectives, and performance and improvement efforts, while providing supervision to the nursing staff.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3-5 years of experience
  • Graduate from an accredited program of professional nursing
  • Currently licensed to practice by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing
  • Thorough knowledge of TJC, HCFA, OSHA requirements, and state and federal regulatory requirements
  • CPR certification and successful completion of training in Handle With Care within 90 days of employment and prior to assisting in restraining procedures

Job Duties
  • Ensure that all staff members deliver care in accordance with the ANA Standards of Care and Practice.
  • Implement unit policies and procedures and act as a resource to the staff.
  • Responsible for unit compliance with TJC, HCFA and state and regulatory standards and patient rights standards.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness; formulate and implement plans for improvement.
  • Assist with developing priorities, goals, and action plans; develop and maintain scheduling procedures for staffing of nursing care.
  • Coordinate the process for determining and maintaining accurate legal processes for patients.
  • Ensure infection control, safety and risk management policies are consistently implemented on the unit.
  • Coordinate, maintain and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment planning offered by Nursing Services.
  • Process variance reports, conduct investigations and corrective plans when needed.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and be responsible for the effectiveness of the unit quality improvement program.
  • Monitor medical records for appropriate documentation of care and effectiveness and assure correction of medical record deficiencies.
  • Collaborate with case management to ensure patients receive timely, quality care.
  • Select, orient, supervise, and evaluate clinical staff; assist with identifying educational needs for staff and establish in-service/development programs.
  • Ensure departmental activities and records adhere to regulatory requirements; evaluate nursing care given and make recommendations to develop action plans for improvement; assist with development and implementation of service standards and patient satisfaction.
  • Prioritize and formulate a plan of care based on patient assessment and according to policy.
  • Assist in the development of a plan of care with specific and measurable goals, objectives and interventions defining actions unique to each patient's needs.
  • Update and revise the plan as goals/objectives are met or when the patient's condition changes.
  • Document the treatment plan, nursing interventions and the patient's response to the intervention.
  • Assign and direct personnel in the implementation of nursing care plans and verify the patient’s care through direct observation and consistent review of the chart.
  • Provide education to patients and families based on their identified needs and limitations, such as communication, interpersonal and social skills and basic principles of physical health.
  • Provide and document discharge instructions including food and drug interactions and diets.
  • Use appropriate interventions in psychiatric and medical emergencies.
  • Coordinate process for determining and maintaining accurate legal processes for patients.
  • Comply with established measures for infection control, OSHA regulations and risk management.
  • Act as the patient’s advocate and assure that patient rights are upheld.
  • Utilize seclusion/restraint procedures applicable to adult body size and prior history of violent or emotional behaviors and/or history of physical and/or sexual abuse issues.
