Colorectal Robotic Fellow

Sunderland Royal Hospital started its Laparoscopiccolorectal service for the North East of England in 2007 and a Roboticcolorectal service in 2015. The Colorectal unit now provides Colorectal cancer resection,benign colorectal resections, IBD services, full Pelvic floor service, perianaland complex trans anal surgery , Laparoscopic hernia surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction& re-do surgery. The service has expanded each yearwith increasing referrals and high volume procedures are performed every yearwith excellent outcomes.

This post provides a structured educational and surgical experience within a busy Colorectal surgical unit with specialist interest in robotic colorectal cancer,IBD, pelvic floor surgery. It is aimedat surgical trainees post-CCT award who wish to practice colorectal surgery.

The successful Fellow will integrate into the team and receive hands-on training inrobotic/laparoscopic colorectal surgery. They will be expected to participate in clinics, MDT, on call, ward work and audit/teaching activities duringtheirattachment. The Fellow will be expected to be partof teaching in NSTCcadaveric lab in Newcastle. Paper presentations and publications are actively encouraged during attachment.

The Trust is advertising for one 6-month fixedterm post commencing 1 April 2026.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to possess

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, should be at thelevel of CCT and demonstrate competence at the level of a trained Lower GI Surgeon.

The applicant must be competent to participate in a General Surgical on call rotaat registrar level and have experience of work at this level (or demonstrable competence) is expected. Any applicant who is unable to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post and modification of the role would be discussed with consultant colleagues.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to work with other members of the Lower

GI team to deliver patient care including inpatient and outpatients responsibilities, in addition to participating with the General Surgical on call service.

The post holder is expected to possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and demonstrate competence at the level of a Lower GI Surgeon.

The successful applicant will take part in an emergency full shift rota patternof 1 in 9 with other General Surgical Registrars supported at all times by FY1and FY2-CT2 support. The on call periods run Monday to Thursday or Friday to Sunday inclusive.

  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Post CCST/CCT
Skills and Abilities
  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Evidence of bedside teaching
