We are seeking a highly motivated Medical Retina Fellow to join the Ophthalmology Directorate at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, part of South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. As a leading regional centre with a strong track record in clinical excellence, innovation and research, our Medical Retina service continues to expand to meet growing demand across the North East. This fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity to work within a high‑volume, specialist environment delivering care to patients with complex retinal conditions, including AMD, diabetic eye disease and vein occlusions.
You will join a large, collaborative team of medical retina and vitreoretinal consultants, specialist nurses, optometrists and imaging colleagues. The post provides hands‑on experience in the assessment and management of medical retina patients, supported by access to advanced imaging technology and one of the busiest macular units in the country. The role also provides opportunities for involvement in teaching, audit and our active retinal research portfolio.
You need to have completed MRCOphth or equivalent, full general Ophthalmology experience is essential. Applicants should have evidence of ongoing professional development with good interpersonal and communication skills.

Work on our New Eye Hospital in Sunderland is nearing completion; the new hospital means Sunderland will remain home to the region’s only dedicated standalone eye hospital. It will strengthen our excellent reputation across the NHS, both regionally and nationally as a centre of excellence for ophthalmology care.

We are delighted to offer a highly motivated, ambitious individual the opportunity to join our integrated Ophthalmology team as a Specialist Doctor specialising in Medical Retina. The Medical Retina department consists of 6 WTE consultants including VR and Medical Retina. The hospital is fully equipped with modern imaging cameras and also has the ability to perform Electro Diagnostic testing in house with referral to the regional lab if needed.
There is a newly acquired B‑Scan Ultrasound machine with specialist ultrasound clinics running once a week. The department also has a pattern Argon laser machine as well as Heyex
