SEMH Support Worker

Location: Sunderland
Salary: £95 - £115 per day (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract Type: Day-to-day / Long Term, Full-time / Part-time

Are you a compassionate and resilient individual with a passion for supporting young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?

GSL Education Newcastle are seeking dedicated SEMH Support Workers to work in schools across Sunderland
, helping students overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive educational and personal outcomes.

The successful SEMH Support Worker will provide tailored support to students with a range of social, emotional, and behavioural needs. Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams, you will help create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment where students can build confidence, develop positive relationships, and thrive both academically and emotionally.

Responsibilities of an SEMH Support Worker:
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support for students with SEMH needs.
  • Support students according to their individual learning and behaviour plans.
  • Promote positive behaviour and encourage emotional regulation strategies.
  • Build trusting relationships that support students' wellbeing and personal development.
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging and inclusive learning activities.
  • Help students develop social skills, resilience, and confidence.
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to teaching and pastoral staff.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external professionals to support student outcomes.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment.
Requirements of an SEMH Support Worker:
  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, behavioural, or additional learning needs is desirable.
  • Relevant qualifications in Education, Health & Social Care, Childcare, Psychology, or a related field are advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of SEMH needs and positive behaviour support strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patient, empathetic, and resilient approach to supporting students.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
  • Genuine commitment to promoting the wellbeing, development, and achievement of young people.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply via GSL Education.
