The Opportunity
We are recruiting for a Structural Engineer to join our Fairport Sunderland site. The purpose of the Structural Engineer role is to ensure that Civil/Structural designs meet the highest standards with regards to safety, code compliance, scope alignment, quality, cost, and on-time delivery.
In this role you will guide and validate Civil/Structural designs to support project delivery, promoting structural efficiency and cost optimization, without compromising safety. You will effectively communicate design requirements with the design team and project engineer, in accordance with project programme deadlines.
Responsibilities- Review project specifications and confirm scope of supply (including anticipated cost/programme and the impact into the project team.
- Prepare Civil/Structural Basis of Design summary prior to commencing engineering works.
- Produce analysis models to validate civil/structural configurations, and to generate foundation loads.
- Ensure analytical models transfer loads as expected, and that axial forces and moments are fixed/released as stability and connection design demands.
- Produce hand calculations to validate connection design.
- Effectively communicate design requirements to the design team.
- Check Civil/Structural drawing output to ensure information reflects analytical models and calculations.
- Prepare Civil/Structural calculation reports for inclusion in the project technical file.
- Support CAT 2/CAT 3 checking requirements with any supplementary information as required.
- Attend sites as required to conduct site and/or condition surveys and prepare reports on findings.
- Attend project design/model reviews, supporting interfacing and tolerancing where applicable.
- Attend client meetings as requested by the Project Engineer.
- Update Project Engineer and Head of Civil/Structural on progress against tasks on a weekly basis, highlighting blockers or foreseen issues.
- Identify and escalate any changes to civil/structural scope to the Project Engineer to capture via the DCN process.
- Deliver works in alignment with the business’s ISO 9001 processes and templates as controlled within the Quality Management System (COS).
- Engage with the quarterly 1-2-1 process and take actions to address areas for improvement.
- Ensure personal objectives are completed in a timely manner and support department/business objectives year-on-year.
- Maintain alignment with company values and vision. Perform other ad hoc duties as required and commensurate with grade of post.
- Identification and escalation of all civil/structural Technical Queries (TQ) that occur on the projects.
- Minimum BEng (Hons) in Engineering (preferably Civil or Structural Engineering).
- Experience in a Civil/Structural engineering field.
- Knowledge of the construction & process industries and applicable standards.
- Ability to use structural analytical software unaided – STAAD Pro or TEKLA Structures.
- Understanding of load cases and combinations, and ability to deduce structures are behaving as intended through calculation or analysis.
- Experience of good time management in a project delivery environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality performance/ output.
- Strong communicator with internal and external customers alike, with good presentation skills.
