This is an exciting opportunity to join the Phoenix Unit Team at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Phoenix Unit - Sunderland site. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced administration assistant to join our team and support the delivery of high quality safe Oncology and haematology care.

You will be a first point of contact for telephone enquiries from patients/carers and will be responsible for booking appointments for new patients as well as follow up care, covering both South Tyneside and Sunderland sites. The right candidate will have strong communication skills. You will be fully supported to ensure you develop the skills required for the post.

Main duties of the job

You will need to have excellent communication skills and be confident at communicating with patients who are receiving systemic anti‑cancer treatment. You will need to be confident in communicating with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team at all levels. Respond to frequent enquiries from patients, carers and NHS staff using verbal and written communication. Deal with queries in a confidential, sensitive manner.

Be able to navigate around the trust’s IT systems though training will be provided. Managing patient appointments across both SACT units in South Tyneside and Sunderland.

This will include making contact with new patients and arranging/re‑arranging appointments for established patients.

To provide a high quality reception/admin service and care to patients attending the Phoenix Unit.

To be responsible for registering attendances and updating patient demographic details in the patient administration system.

To comply with the Trust’s vision values and behavioural compact.

Person Specification Skills & Knowledge
  • Ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Ability to communicate in an understandable way to patients and colleagues, adapting communication style to meet the needs of the recipient.
  • Ability to communicate messages and instructions accurately to colleagues, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic skills of empathy and reassurance.
  • Basic keyboard skills.
  • Ability to use basic email system and document clearly, using plain English.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety requirements in a patient environment.
  • General understanding of confidentiality requirements in a health care setting.
  • Willing to undertake further training related to role.
Qualifications
  • Maths and English at level 2 or above (GCSE A to C or equivalent).
  • NVQ Level 2 qualification or equivalent/experience in any subject.
Experience
  • Proven prior experience of working in the NHS.
Physical Skills
  • Basic keyboard skills.
