Organisation:
International Community Organisation of Sunderland (ICOS), in partnership with Durham Wildlife Trust (DWT) for the City of Nature Sunderland project. Role:
Translation and Community Support Officer.
Location:
Sunderland (citywide outreach focusing on the most deprived areas).
Contract:
3-year fixed term.
Hours:
Part-time (22.5 hours per week / 3 days). Start: 01 April 2026. Salary: £21,649 – £23,191 per annum (pro rata for part-time). Flexible hours available. This role is offered as a Living Wage Employer position with salary progression in line with the Living Wage Foundation.

Role descriptionAre you passionate about environmental justice and empowering migrant communities? ICOS is looking for a dedicated Translation and Community Support Officer to join the “City of Nature Sunderland” partnership. This role bridges the gap between nature conservation and social inclusion. You will lead outreach to migrant and minoritized residents, breaking down linguistic and cultural barriers to ensure everyone can enjoy and protect Sunderland’s local environment.
Working alongside Durham Wildlife Trust and other partners, you will facilitate hands-on workshops—from urban gardening to energy literacy—encouraging meaningful action for the planet. About the PartnershipAbout ICOS: ICOS supports migrant and minoritized communities in the North East of England by advocating for their rights and creating opportunities. We help people access benefits, services, welfare, and employability, and we bring people together to empower them.
About Durham Wildlife Trust: A leading nature conservation charity managing over 35 nature reserves, dedicated to connecting people with nature through education, volunteering, and community-led environmental action.
About Sunderland City of Nature: Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, this 3-year programme addresses barriers to nature by offering free, local, and culturally tailored activities to build environmental confidence and foster community cohesion through a roving community hub model.
Responsibilities- Lead outreach to migrant and minoritized residents to promote inclusion in environmental initiatives.
- Facilitate hands-on workshops (e.g., urban gardening, energy literacy) in collaboration with ICOS, DWT and partner organisations.
- Support partnership work and coordinate activities that encourage community engagement with Sunderland’s environment.
- Act as a translator/community liaison to break down linguistic and cultural barriers.
- Contribute to project development and reporting as required by the partnership.
- Demonstrated ability to balance knowledge, skills, passion/commitment and experience relevant to the role.
- Strong organisational and communication skills; empathetic, collaborative, and community‑minded.
- Experience in outreach, community engagement, or a similar role is desirable.
