An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated 1st level band 5 staff nurse to work within the Cataract Treatment Centre. We currently have vacancies for a 37.5‑hour post and a part‑time post of 18.5 hours. The role is interesting, varied and includes duties and responsibilities across both the theatre and outpatient settings. In‑house training will be given to achieve the competencies required for the role.
The service is presently Monday to Friday with variable shift patterns from 8.00am to 17.30. There are opportunities for development including pre‑assessment and the role of primary and scrub nurse.
Within the Cataract Treatment Centre, the role of a Band 5 staff nurse is diverse, varied and fast‑paced caring for patients attending for cataract surgery and other cataract‑related services. The role involves working across theatre and outpatients with many responsibilities and duties throughout the patient journey including high‑volume, fast‑track theatre lists. In‑house training will be given and competency‑based assessments undertaken to learn all aspects of the role including pre‑assessment, primary nursing and scrub nursing.
Good communication and organisational skills are essential for this role, and you will be required to work as part of our multidisciplinary team to deliver a high standard of patient care in a fast‑paced environment.

- To be responsible and accountable for the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate nursing care for patients designated to their care.
- To always work to the NMC Code.
- To supervise non‑registered staff as stipulated by the NMC under the requirement of delegation.
- Provide effective leadership and assist with the management and organisation of the ward/department in the absence of the Ward Manager or Junior Sister / Charge Nurse.
- To comply with the Trust’s vision, values and behavioural compact.
- Current NMC Registration (Level 1 adult nurse) or evidence of qualification if newly qualified.
- Degree in nursing studies or healthcare related subject (UK equivalent).
- Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
- Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information.
- Able to work without supervision.
- Competent in the use of IT such as Microsoft Office.
- Evidence of CPD.
- Knowledge of national health and social care policy.
- Knowledge of evidence‑based guidelines e.g. NICE guidelines, NHS alerts, current nursing legislation.
- Venepuncture and cannulation competency.
- Experience of working in an acute hospital or community healthcare setting.
- Recent experience of working as a registered nurse.
- Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
