As a Senior Environmental Services Technician, within our dedicated Local Services team, you can contribute to improving environmental standards within Sunderland.
Applicants will enjoy working outdoors, being active and dealing with people. You will work with and supervise a team or work independently, to provide exceptional services to our residents and visitors, by completing grounds maintenance and street cleansing tasks across the city. The job can be physically demanding, as you carry out a range of duties, including seasonal work tasks, outdoors, and in all weather conditions.
You will complete a range of routine operational tasks requiring the skilled operation of vehicles, power tools or equipment in accordance with work practices to support the provision of front-line services which is aligned to customer need. You will be responsible for undertaking checks to ensure vehicles, tools or equipment are safe to use and properly adjusted prior to operation and ensuring team compliance.
Full PPE and training will be provided or facilitated.

- Supervise a team or work independently to deliver grounds maintenance and street cleansing across the city.
- Provide exceptional service to residents and visitors.
- Maintain safety, quality and efficiency in daily work activities; adhere to policies, procedures and legislation.
- Develop colleagues’ skills, including mentoring apprentices and new staff.
- Full UK driving licence and ability to operate vehicles and a variety of power tools and technical equipment.
- Capability to carry out routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Good communication skills; ability to follow and communicate instructions, policies, procedures and legislation to colleagues.
- Ability to develop the skills of colleagues, including mentoring apprentices and new staff.
- Willingness to work from multiple Council locations (Hendon, South Hylton, Houghton Le Spring, Washington, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Sunderland City Hall).
- Flexibility to work any day of the week (Mon–Sun) and respond to calls at short notice; may be required to work on Bank/Public holidays and between Christmas and New Year as required by the service and post.
