Charcoalblue is seeking a Theatre Design Consultant to join our global Theatre Consulting team. This role focuses on building planning and auditorium design, creating functional and inspiring spaces where performing arts and other events can thrive.
Interview ProcessInterviews will be conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams or in person at our New York Studio, beginning in January 2026. Confirmation of time, date, and location will be provided to shortlisted candidates.
Description of RoleAs a theatre/venue design consultant you will be responsible for:
- Developing initial auditorium concepts and design, establishing form, function, and identity, and creating seating layouts, seating design, and detailed sightline studies.
- Serving as a key point of design synthesis for internal team members, including technical systems designers and acousticians.
- Coordinating and collaborating with project architects on architectural and engineering drawings, reviewing construction progress on-site, and performing measurements and punch‑listing for the commissioning of seating systems.
- Creating and presenting design presentations, written reports, 2D and 3D drawings, sketches, and written specifications to document and communicate design work.
- Ensuring project demands are met and delivered to a high standard of quality.
- Managing multiple project teams simultaneously, meeting deadlines, and balancing project deliverables.
- Traveling to meetings and construction sites throughout North America as required.

- Ability to express design ideas through hand or computer‑generated sketches.
- Experience creating reports and presentations, including proven ability to lay out text, photographs, and drawings using Microsoft Office, InDesign, Adobe, or a similar package.
- Excellent visual assessment and communication skills, including the ability to conceptualize and communicate three‑dimensional ideas in 2D media.
- Experience communicating effectively with people at varying levels within an organization.
- A proactive and imaginative approach to finding solutions that meet project constraints.
- Confidence in presenting and discussing ideas in internal and external meetings.
- Ability to incorporate knowledge of theatre and venue operations into design work to create functional front‑of‑house and back‑of‑house spaces that meet artistic, functional, and audience needs.
- Knowledge of contractual issues and the AIA project stages and associated levels of work output.
- Excellent drafting skills in both 2D and 3D; proficient using rendering and visualization tools.
- Experience with Autodesk Revit and BIM documentation.
- Experience creating and navigating VR models and experiences for design visualization.
- Experience in designing theatre building elements such as rigging, staging, stage lighting, audiovisual, and acoustic design.
- Basic knowledge of technical systems of a performance venue, including lighting, rigging, and AV systems, and awareness of backstage architectural planning, environmental, and acoustical parameters.
- Understanding of local and state building codes and safety legislation relevant to design work.
- Ability to assess sightlines and audience accommodation concepts in all public areas of a venue.
- Highly organized with excellent time‑management and reliable work ethic.
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Adept at multi‑tasking and working calmly under pressure.
- Friendly and professional manners.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a local and global team.
