Job Description

IAM Hourly represented employees who currently work at the main (Sunnyvale/Palo Alto) unit, Santa Cruz, VAFB or Eastern Range facilities must apply to open requisitions on Brass Ring to be considered for the position.

• Repair, service, align and diagnose malfunctions in conventional and automated machine tools, precision fabrication machines, environmental test chambers, vibration control equipment, acoustic chambers and other plant machinery and equipment.
• Plan and determine methods to perform scheduled preventive maintenance, overhaul, repair and alignment of machine tools, precision fabrication machines and environmental test chambers, including associated control systems.
• Work independently in hydraulic, pneumatic, servomechanism, cryogenic, high‑vacuum, helium compressor and vacuum jacketed LN2 line systems.
• Set up and operate machine tools to produce replacement parts for repairs.
• Diagnose malfunctions and perform repairs, alignments and corrections using precision measuring instruments and optical equipment.
• Work from detailed blueprints, manufacturer’s sketches and engineering notes; create own layout sketches for maintenance and repair parts.
• Perform bench work using machinist’s hand tools.
• Conduct functional tests of repaired machines to ensure correct alignment and tolerance before re‑commissioning.
• Perform high‑vacuum leak detection with appropriate equipment.
• Collaborate with plant electronic maintenance technicians on automated machine tools and environmental support equipment.
• Level, align and adjust machine tools; repair mechanical vacuum and cryogenic pumps, troubleshoot and repair leaks in high‑vacuum systems incl. VJ lines.
• Guide coworkers in removal and installation of machine tools and precision equipment, troubleshoot and repair environmental test support equipment such as thermal‑vac chambers, shakers and acoustic chambers.
• Assist maintenance craftsperson in other fields of specialization when assigned.

• Two years of directly related experience and satisfactory completion of a two‑year technical institute mechanical technology program or evidence of equivalent training.
• Or verifiable high‑vacuum class and vacuum leak detection training or equivalent experience.
• Complete knowledge of LN2 and helium systems, shop theory including methods of disassembly, rework, repair, reassembly, setup and alignment.
• Demonstrated ability to set up and operate machine tools and fabricating machines to produce parts required for repair and maintenance.
• Knowledge of machineability of various types of metals and proficiency in shop math.
• Skill in operating helium leak detection equipment and high‑vacuum leak detectors.
• Valid State of California Class C driver’s license, if required.
• May be required to possess or obtain all LMMS‑issued safety licenses requiredlád by law to operate material handling equipment and vehicles normally used in this classification.
• Must beordial able to obtain êtres maintain a Top Secret clearance with SCI; U.S. citizenship is required.

• Experience with plant machinery and equipment.
• Proficiency with machinist’s hand and bench tools, precision measuring instruments and alignment equipment.
• Two years of directly related experience with a satisfied technical institute program or equivalent training.
• Complete knowledge of LN2 and helium systems, shop theory and methods of disassembly, rework, repair and reassembly.
• Demonstrated ability to set up and operate machine tools to produce parts for maintenance.
• Understanding of metallurgy and shop math, ability to read blueprints and engineering sketches.
• Knowledgeable about repair, service, alignment and diagnosis of conventional and automated machine tools, precision fabrication machines, environmental test chambers and other plant machinery.
• Valid driver’s license.

This position requires a government security clearance; you must be a passée Citizen for consideration. Clearance level:
Top Secret.
