We’re seeking a Senior Manager, Software Engineering to help build and scale Cairns Health’s AI-driven remote care platform for seniors and people with complex, chronic conditions. This role is a hands‑on, player‑coach position at the intersection of backend systems, LLM‑powered applications, and healthcare‑grade reliability. You will own core platform architecture, lead a small team of engineers, and drive execution from design through production—balancing speed, quality, and long‑term maintainability while operating in a regulated, real‑world healthcare environment.
Responsibilities- Remain deeply hands‑on
, contributing production code on a regular basis while leading by example. - Own and evolve the architecture and system design of core backend and AI‑driven platforms.
- Design, build, and operate scalable backend services supporting LLM‑powered health and wellness applications.
- Make pragmatic architectural decisions that balance rapid iteration with long‑term maintainability and reliability.
- Lead design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions, serving as a technical authority for the team.
- Manage and mentor a team of 3–4 software engineers
, fostering growth, accountability, and technical excellence. - Act as a player‑coach
, supporting engineers through hands‑on guidance, pairing, and thoughtful feedback. - Support hiring, onboarding, and development of future team members as the organization grows.
- Create a collaborative, inclusive, and high‑performance engineering culture.
- Own team delivery, including planning, execution, quality, and timelines
. - Translate product and business requirements into clear technical plans and deliverables.
- Drive adoption of Agile practices and tools
, including sprint planning, backlog management, retrospectives, and continuous improvement. - Partner closely with product, design, clinical, and operations teams to deliver customer value efficiently.
- Collaborate across backend, data, AI/LLM, hardware, and firmware teams to deliver integrated solutions.
- Work within healthcare and regulated environments, contributing to systems that require security, reliability, and compliance.
- Participate in operational excellence efforts, including monitoring, observability, incident response, and uptime improvements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field or equivalent practical experience, coupled with 3-5 years of professional experience as a Full Stack Software Engineer or in a similar role.
- Professional experience in LLM architectures (e.g. RAG) is a must
- Familiarity with commonly used LLM APIs (OpenAI, Gemini, etc.)
- Proficient in React and React Native for building responsive and mobile‑first user interfaces, with strong experience in Redux for effective state management.
- Proficient in Python and Java 11+ for developing robust server‑side applications and experienced in designing and implementing RESTful APIs to facilitate seamless integration between front‑end and back‑end systems.
- Hands‑on experience with Postgre
SQL or other relational databases
, ensuring efficient data storage, retrieval, and management for scalable applications. - Proficient in containerization using Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes
, with a proven track record of deploying and managing applications on AWS EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service) and ECS (Elastic Container Service). - Familiarity with messaging systems like Kafka and MQTT for real‑time data processing and communication, along with proficiency in using Git Hub for version control and collaborative development.
- Experience implementing and managing CI/CD pipelines using Git Hub Actions or similar tools, familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies for iterative and collaborative software development, and strong problem‑solving and analytical abilities to tackle complex technical challenges.
- Positive, team player with strong people skills and excellent communication.
