We are seeking a detail-oriented Solar Electrical & Structural Design Reviewer to support our Senior Electrician, Design and Site Planning Director. This role is responsible for reviewing residential and light commercial solar PV designs for code compliance, constructability, and permit readiness before submission to Authorities Having Jurisdiction and utilities.
The ideal candidate has strong foundational knowledge of NEC solar requirements, structural mounting concepts, and site survey interpretation, and can consistently identify design issues using photos, plan sets, and one-line diagrams.
Electrical Design Review
- Review solar PV plan sets for compliance with NEC Articles 690, 705, and 706 when applicable
- Verify accuracy of:
- One-line diagrams
- Inverter and equipment ratings
- Conductor sizing and OCPD
- Grounding and bonding
- Rapid shutdown compliance
- Perform basic electrical calculations, including:
- DC string voltage and current
- AC output current
- NEC 120 percent busbar rule
- Identify service panel limitations and flag designs requiring:
- Service upgrades
- Line-side taps
- Engineering escalation
- Review site survey photos to assess:
- Roof type, condition, and layout
- Mounting feasibility and obstructions
- Fire access and setback requirements
- Verify structural details match engineering assumptions:
- Attachment spacing
- Mounting methods by roof type
- Wind and snow load notes
- Identify conditions requiring reroofing, additional engineering, or design revision
- Ensure plan sets are complete, consistent, and permit-ready
- Verify labeling, notes, and diagrams align across all sheets
- Identify common AHJ rejection risks before submission
- Document design issues clearly and provide corrective guidance
- 2+ years of experience in solar PV design, review, or electrical drafting
- Working knowledge of:
- NEC solar requirements, U.S. codes
- Residential electrical systems
- Solar inverters and mounting systems
- Ability to read and interpret:
- One-line diagrams
- Site survey photos
- Structural details
- Strong attention to detail and quality control mindset
- Experience supporting U.S.
-based solar installers or EPCs - Familiarity with common AHJ requirements and utility interconnections
- Experience reviewing failed permits or inspection corrections
- Knowledge of batteries and energy storage systems
- Plan review software or PDF markup tools
- Solar design platforms such as Aurora, Helio Scope, Open Solar, Solo, or similar
- Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
- Accuracy of issue identification
- Reduction in permit rejections and corrections
- Adherence to review timelines
- Quality and clarity of reviewer comments
- Escalation of safety or compliance risks
- Designs are approved by AHJs with minimal corrections
- Electrical and structural risks are identified early
- Field crews receive buildable, compliant plans
- Engineering escalations are appropriate and well documented
