Classification Summary
As an assistant to the high school Band Director, the Percussion instructor coordinates the preparations, exercises, and activities of the school marching band’s percussion and front ensemble unit, in addition to planning and directing winter programs. The instructor prepares and directs the unit for independent performance, competition, and performances within the larger marching band.

Essential Duties

  • Attend all rehearsals, band camps, and performances, actively assisting students during sectional and whole group rehearsals.
  • Instruct basic to advanced percussion rudiments and fundamentals.
  • Organize and lead rehearsals and sectionals.
  • Develop and implement visual design of the program.
  • Instruct percussion techniques for battery, mallet, and electronic instruments.
  • Collaborate with drill writers and unit staff on show design.
  • Manage audio engineering and sound design.
  • Repair and maintain equipment.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with Athletic Director, Band Director, Percussion Director, staff, students, administration, boosters, and custodial staff.
  • Recommend equipment purchases within budget, with Band Director approval.
  • Advise boosters, directors, and parents on percussion studies within the marching arts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Principal or Band Director to ensure program success.
  • Education And Experience

    • High School Diploma or GED; higher education preferred.
    • Experience in marching arts (DCI, WGI, high school, college).
    • Experience with marching arts technology (sound systems, MIDI, sound design, microphones, live audio engineering).
    • Experience as battery or front ensemble tech.
    • Experience with various subgroups of percussion units.
    • Experience in composing and choreographing routines.
    • Experience working with school-aged students, preferably at high school level.
    • Experience with drill writing software is preferred.

    Licensing/Certifications

    • Valid Level I Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (FPCC).

    Knowledge Of

    • Percussion techniques
    • Audio engineering and sound design
    • Equipment maintenance and repair
    • Marching band auxiliary performance
    • Performing with drum corps, university marching, or military organizations
    • Instruction/adjudication of drum corps or marching organizations

    Skill In

    • Choreographing routines for percussion units
    • Working with K-12 students
    • Collaborating with multiple groups

    Ada And Other Requirements

    Positions require stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

    Moderate Work:
    Exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly; standing for extended periods.

    Working Conditions:
    Indoors in classrooms or gyms, outdoors in stadiums, exposure to loud noise, and extreme weather for long periods.
