Public Information Officer

The City of Surprise Marketing & Communications Department is seeking a Public Information Officer (PIO) to be the voice of the city – keeping the community and city staff informed and educated about what’s happening in Surprise! This includes writing multimedia copy, acting as a city spokesperson, interacting with media, engaging on the city’s social media channels, planning public engagement events, and more.

This position works in a fast‑paced environment on a dynamic team that includes another PIO, graphic designers, website specialists, and TV production folks.

Duties of a Public Information Officer include all facets of internal and external marketing and communications for the City through writing, video, social media, design and other methods of communication. This position is responsible for fostering civic involvement and awareness of City activities, programs and services by developing and implementing key communications, and handling media relations and crisis communications, including serving as a designated spokesperson for the City.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or related field and five (5) years public information experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed in the job description.

Must have at the time of hire and be able to maintain a valid Arizona driver license.
