Summary

Maintain an attractive, safe, clean, and secure school, related buildings, and adjacent grounds for students, staff, and the public.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Maintain and cares for district grounds.
  • Cultivate soil as needed and plant seeds, trees and shrubbery under the direction of the Plant Manager.
  • Prune trees and trim hedges to promote growth and improve appearance of grounds.
  • Mow lawns and edges sidewalks with appropriate equipment.
  • Fill with soil, gopher holes and any other uneven and hazardous areas of the grounds.
  • Fertilize trees and shrubs on a regular semiannual basis.
  • Report promptly major repairs needed on grounds equipment to supervisor.
  • Connect and dispose of leaves, chippings and refuse.
  • Connect sprinkling equipment.
  • Inspect shrubs and trees for evidence of disease of pests and treat with sprays or chemicals as needed.
  • Maintain and recommend purchases of suitable supplies, tools and equipment used in maintaining grounds.
  • Adjust and repair such equipment as lawnmowers, sprinklers, and hedge shears.
  • Plant seeds, bulbs, tree seedlings, and shrubbery so that resulting growth will produce an attractive appearance.
  • Assist with facility maintenance as needed.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, employees, community members and vendors.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.
Education
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
Minimum Experience
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in grounds maintenance work.
Licensing
  • Obtain and maintain valid Level I Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).
Knowledge Of
  • Techniques and methods for organizing and prioritizing work.
  • Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work.
  • Standard system functions and methods of assigned work.
  • Project management principles and practices.
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices.
  • Safety practices relating to the handling, storage, and use of chemical products and equipment.
  • Cleaning, sanitation, and health standards.
  • Uses and properties of supplies and equipment.
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations (based on assignment).
  • Customer service principles.
  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment.
  • Modern office technology.
Skill In
  • Organizing tasks, meeting deadlines and prioritizing competing demands.
  • Comprehending reference books and manuals.
  • Providing attention to detail in assignments.
  • Operating assigned tools and equipment.
  • Providing customer service.
  • Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications.
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Ada And Other Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is mainly performed in an indoor environment; moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, movement restrictions and intense noise.
