Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with Fleet Maintenance Manager in regards to priorities for scheduled inspections, maintenance, and repairs of buses and other District vehicles.
  • Communicates with Fleet Maintenance Manager concerning the status of and interruptions to the completion of work assigned to mechanics.
  • Assigns work to mechanics, monitors quality, and supervises performance to assure compliance with applicable Federal and State safety regulations.
  • Monitors fleet maintenance staffs’ and visitors’ compliance with safety practices and informs Fleet Maintenance Supervisor of corrective action taken.
  • Oversees inspection, maintenance, performs repair, and installation-removal of specialized equipment, such as bus-vehicle surveillance systems, Zonar GPS units and related equipment; and informs Fleet Maintenance Manager of irregularities and problems.
  • Responds to service calls to repair or arrange for towing buses or other District vehicles.
  • Assists mechanics with diagnosing and troubleshooting various automotive, mechanical, and related problems.
  • Assists in assessing breakdowns, accidents, and emergency situations; takes corrective action; and road-tests buses and other District vehicles as necessary.
  • Assists in evaluating vehicle inspection reports and input of vehicle repairs performed on work order into vehicle maintenance software programs as necessary.
  • Assists in maintenance of accurate records of fleet repairs, repair costs, parts procurement, vehicle warranties, and etc., to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees software system used to issue HID Proxy Card, Zonar card, and related devices integrated with automated fuel dispensing, building access, and related records.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, employees, community members and vendors.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and five years of related experience as a journey-level mechanic performing a full range of fleet repairs on heavy duty and/or commercial vehicles. Experience in a lead or supervisory position is desirable.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing / Certifications
  • Valid Arizona Commercial Driver License, Class B with P endorsement, without restrictions, or must be obtained within 90 days of employment, and satisfactory driving record.
  • A.S.E. School Bus Certification preferred.
  • Certification of completion of technical training in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance preferred.
  • Valid Level I Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (FPCC).

  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline powered motorized vehicles.
  • Principles of internal combustion engines, electrical systems, and hydraulics.
  • Principles of braking systems, drive trains, heating and cooling systems.
  • Principles of video surveillance systems, GPS and EVIR systems, and related vehicle telematics.
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations (based on assignment).
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices.
  • Customer service principles.
  • Operating a variety of hand tools, test equipment, computers, applicable software systems, office machines and motor vehicles.
