Job Description & How to Apply Below
Engineering Service Business Unit focuses on power system software development, power system and substation consulting studies and compliance testing services, as well as asset management solutions for electric utilities and other clients in power industry. We are the vendor of the cutting‑edge power system analysis software package, DSATools™, which has been recognized globally as leading‑edge technologies and software platforms for dynamic security assessment of large complex power systems for both off‑line (system planning) and on‑line applications (near‑real‑time operation).

We provide a full spectrum of study services from fast electromagnetic transient switching studies, to typical power system planning and operation studies, post‑mortem investigation of system disturbances and equipment failures, grounding, and to protection and insulation coordination studies.

We are seeking a Senior Electromagnetic Simulation Engineer with deep expertise in ANSYS Maxwell and low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) field modeling.

In this role, you will lead advanced simulation efforts to study, analyze, and optimize electromechanical systems and electrical protection devices using 2D/3D finite element methods (FEM). You will work on complex real‑world applications including arc flash phenomena, circuit breakers, motors, actuators, transformers, and sensors, contributing directly to product performance, safety, and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and execute advanced 2D and 3D electromagnetic simulations using ANSYS Maxwell for low‑frequency EM applications

Model and analyze arc flash phenomena, transient EM behavior, and coupled electromagnetic–mechanical effects

Apply finite element methods (FEM) techniques to calculate:

Magnetic and electric field distributions

Electromagnetic forces and torque

Capacitance and inductance

Eddy currents and losses

Conduct parametric studies and design optimization to improve device performance and reliability

Collaborate cross‑functionally with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to support product development, troubleshooting and root‑cause investigations

Validate simulation results using analytical calculations and experimental or test data

Prepare clear and comprehensive technical reports including methodologies, assumptions, results and recommendations

Mentor junior engineers and contribute to developing best practices, workflows, and standards for electromagnetic simulation

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electromagnetics, Physics, or a related field. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with direct work experience will be considered.

Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (i.e., non‑British Columbia registrations are acceptable as long as there is an ability to immediately transfer the accreditation).

Minimum of five (5) years of hands‑on experience with ANSYS Maxwell (or equivalent low‑frequency EM simulation tools)

Strong understanding of electromagnetic theory and finite element analysis (FEA/FEM)

Proven experience modeling electromechanical devices such as:

Circuit breakers and switch gear

Electric motors and actuators

Transformers and inductive components

EM sensors

Experience calculating EM forces, torque, capacitance, and field distributions

Ability to interpret simulation results and translate them into design recommendations

Experience with arc flash modeling and transient electromagnetic simulations

Knowledge of multi‑physics coupling (EM–thermal, EM–mechanical)

Familiarity with scripting or automation (e.g., Python, MATLAB, ANSYS scripting)

Experience working in regulated industries (power systems, industrial equipment, automotive, aerospace, or energy)

Performance Competencies

Able to plan ahead, solve engineering problems, increase efficiency and get things done safely

Able to engage with stakeholders, understand business priorities as well as project impacts

Demonstrates a strategic focus, adapt to a constrained schedule and perform well under time pressure

Demonstrates the importance of self-development and team work

Effective written and verbal communication skills and comfortable in delivering presentations to a variety of stakeholders
