General Summary

The Environmental Manager (EM) reports directly to the Sr. Environmental Manager (Senior EM) assigned to their region or the Environmental Operations Director. The EM’s activities are supervised and specific duties determined by the Senior EM. The EM implements company policies and procedures related to all environmental media—including air, stormwater, groundwater, solid, and hazardous waste—and maintains regional facilities in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, standards, and permits.

This position is responsible for on‑site fieldwork associated with sampling, monitoring, observing, and recording environmental data; preparing reports, records, and plans required by regulatory permits, plans, or agreements. The EM assists in planning, designing, installing, and operating pollution control equipment and associated metering devices. The EM delivers training programs, advises management on pollution prevention and compliance, and provides first‑line environmental emergency responses to incidents, spills, releases, and accidents.

The EM conducts site investigations and remediation projects related to due diligence activities and other identified environmental issues.

The goal is to achieve excellence in environmental management while ensuring safety, effectiveness, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The role seeks to reduce incidents, errors, and compliance deviations while increasing profitability.

Essential Functions
  • Environmental
    • Ensure strict adherence to all company environmental standards.
    • Monitor capital projects and recommend improvements to environmental controls.
    • Encourage reporting of environmental control violations.
    • Assist in training site personnel as required by local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Assist in developing and implementing environmental procedures for all sites.
    • Monitor pending legislative and regulatory actions, evaluate impact on operations, and develop appropriate response plans.
    • Support a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
  • Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
    • Maintain all EMS clauses and requirements for ISO 14001:2015 certified sites or sites undergoing EMS implementation and certification.
    • Participate in EMS implementation activities at assigned sites, attend all Stage II audits and report outs.
    • Participate in the EMS internal auditor program and complete auditor training within six months of obtaining the EM role.
  • Operational Performance & Best Management Practices
    • Spend approximately 50 % of time in the field to assist operations staff and other EMs in continuous improvement of environmental compliance programs.
    • Prepare and maintain environmental records and reports.
    • Ensure investigations and incident analyses are completed and corrective actions implemented.
    • Assist in planning, reviewing, and overseeing remedial actions involving multiple media under various federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
    • Assist in achieving specific waste reduction and minimization at regional locations.
    • Collect, evaluate, and disseminate pertinent information related to environmental compliance requirements and maintain reference files.
    • Advise regional management on environmental objectives and assist in determining and implementing corrective actions.
    • Recommend changes in procedures, design, or equipment when necessary.
    • Represent the organization at public and/or private discussions, regulatory hearings, legal actions, or other public meetings.
    • Maintain relationships with outside associations concerned with environmental protection, regulatory officials, and local politicians.
    • Assist in developing, planning, and managing environmental investigations related to past operations and sites under evaluation for acquisition or sale.
    • Provide oversight and management of work performed by consultants and contractors, coordinating with in‑house and outside legal counsel.
    • Plan, conduct, and/or supervise consultants completing environmental research or other project assignments.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Senior EM or environmental operations management.
