Job Description & How to Apply Below

Powertech’s Engineering Services Business Unit (EBU) provides engineering, testing, and implementation support for utility and infrastructure projects. Our EV Infrastructure team works closely with BC Hydro and industry partners to support the deployment and ongoing operation of public EV charging networks across British Columbia.

Duties

Powertech is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support the EV Operations Program, with primary responsibility for the ongoing reliability, performance, and operational integrity of public EV charging infrastructure.

This role is strongly operations‑driven and coordination‑intensive, involving oversight of electrical systems performance, fault investigation, corrective actions, and lifecycle maintenance of EV charging assets. The successful candidate will work closely with clients, electrical contractors, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and internal technical teams to ensure charging sites meet applicable electrical codes, technical standards, safety requirements, service‑level agreements, and operational KPIs, while supporting long‑term system reliability and sustainability.

Provide advanced technical support for DC fast charging (DCFC) and Level 2 charging systems, including power supply kiosks, service connections, and site electrical systems.

Perform engineering-level investigation and troubleshooting of charging station malfunctions and system faults, site-level electrical issues, outages, and capacity constraints, equipment performance, degradation, and reliability concerns, communication, controls, and system integration issues between chargers, networks, and utilities.

Analyze field data, event logs, site reports, and monitoring system outputs to diagnose root causes and identify recurring technical issues.

Develop and recommend corrective actions, engineering solutions, and design or operational improvements to enhance system reliability and uptime.

Propose, plan, and execute engineering tests and diagnostic activities to support troubleshooting, validation, and program improvements.

Support commissioning, acceptance testing, and post‑deployment stabilization of new EV charging sites, ensuring compliance with design intent and performance requirements.

Ensure charging infrastructure complies with applicable electrical codes, standards, and utility requirements, including CEC, CSA, and BC Hydro standards.

Collaborate with BC Hydro, contractors, charger OEMs, and network providers to resolve complex technical issues and ensure alignment with engineering and operational requirements.

Prepare detailed technical documentation, engineering summaries, and reports to communicate findings, recommendations, and system status to internal teams and clients.

Apply sound engineering judgment to assess safety, operability, cost, and long-term performance implications of technical decisions.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a Canadian university or an institution recognized in Canada.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in electrical engineering, power systems, or infrastructure operations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or managing complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects, preferably involving EV charging infrastructure or utility‑connected systems.
  • Strong background in applying engineering principles to real‑world operational environments, including design validation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and lifecycle support of electrical systems.
Desired skillsets
  • Experience supporting the operation, deployment, or lifecycle management of EV charging infrastructure, including DC fast charging and Level 2 systems.
  • Broad technical knowledge of utility‑facing electrical infrastructure projects, preferably involving BC Hydro or a comparable electric utility.
  • Demonstrated expertise in field-based engineering activities, including commissioning, acceptance testing, maintenance support, and coordination of corrective actions.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Power supply kiosks, service connections,…
