Position: Waste Treatment Engineer/ Process EIT

Convertus Canada Ltd. is seeking a Waste Treatment Engineer / Process Engineer‑in‑training (EIT) for its waste and biofuel facility in Surrey, British Columbia. The role supports engineering oversight, process control, environmental performance, and continuous improvement of organic waste treatment systems, including anaerobic digestion, composting, biogas/gas plant operations, odour control, water treatment, and related processing equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Identifying non‑conforming waste, waste haulers or procedures to Process Leader
    - Biofuel Facility.
  • Work with Process Leader
    - Biofuel Facility to maintain SCADA settings and process performance, relay data from mass balance to process optimizations, analyze SCADA trends, feedstock characteristics, gas production, composting performance, and process outputs, and change SCADA setpoints accordingly.
  • Assist in developing, evaluating and optimizing biological and chemical process control strategies for anaerobic digestion, composting, gas plant, and organic waste treatment operations, including technical assessments, testing, SCADA control parameters, and operating procedures.
  • Assist with scheduling the production process (i.e., preparing work schedules, when to open AD tunnels, composting tunnels, monitor and adjust gas plant as required and ensuring they run to the according regulations).
  • Conduct continuous inspections of all key processes including AD, compost, gas plant to identify abnormalities, make necessary adjustments, evaluate raw materials, organic waste streams, intermediate/final products, by‑products, and waste/emission outputs, and ensure processes meet operational, environmental, and quality requirements.
  • Train employees on processes and SCADA.
  • Planning of consumable, and in‑ and outbound trucks (i.e., compost trucks, mids, ammonium sulphate, etc.).
  • Work with Process Leader
    - Biofuel Facility to write, update, and follow SOP’s, and prepare technical process reports, calculations, summaries, and recommendations related to plant performance, process optimization, waste treatment, gas production, emissions control, and operating procedures.
  • Assist Process Leader
    - Biofuel Facility in coordinating work with Maintenance team and Production Leader that impacts processes or safety.
  • Promote safe work environment in accordance with company values, policies, site permit, operational certificate, and legislative requirements to maintain a safe environment for staff, subcontractors, customers, and visitors and coach when needed.
  • Reporting of accidents, incidents, and near misses in accordance with company procedure.
  • Enforcing PPE, FRS and RPE requirements with all persons in accordance with company procedure.
  • Co‑ordinate and lead daily and weekly safety meetings, shift handovers inspections.
  • Participate as a vital team member, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support as required.
  • Be available to participate in the on‑call rotation as required.
  • To carry out any other such reasonable job‑related tasks that Convertus may require including cleaning, maintenance, and administration functions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, environmental engineering, process engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline is required.
  • Eligibility for registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training in British Columbia.
  • 2 years of experience in composting and processing plant is preferred.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, process control, anaerobic digestion, composting, gas plant operations, odour control, water treatment, and environmental compliance is an asset.
  • Ability to interpret process, mass balance, laboratory, and operational data and recommend practical engineering or operating adjustments.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work in an industrial processing facility, wear required PPE, and complete respirator fit testing as required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Work Conditions
  • Work is performed in an industrial biofuel and organic waste processing facility.
  • The role may involve exposure to odours, noise, dust, weather conditions, moving equipment, and biological processing materials.
  • Personal protective equipment is required.
  • Some on‑call availability or schedule adjustment may be required based on operational needs.
  • Employees work in a unionized, highly industrial setting.
