Job Summary

The Medical Director of Medical Education acts as leader and Fraser Health organizational liaison for all medical education that is provided to medical students, residents and clinical fellows at Fraser Health, fostering excellence in clinical training, research and innovation in medical education, in collaboration with the Director, Medical Education Strategy and Integration and the Learning Strategies team. This role is a key enabler of Fraser Health's medical staff strategy, strengthening the physician workforce through aligned medical learning, and recruitment into Fraser Health region and medical staff.

The Medical Director is responsible and reports to the Vice President, Medicine. The incumbent will work closely with the Faculty of Medicine at UBC, School of Medicine at SFU, Heads of Departments and Divisions, post-graduate educational Program Directors and committees, the Executive leadership in Medical Affairs and in Learning Strategies to expand and enhance the delivery of educational programs such that trainees ideally choose to join Fraser Health medical staff.

In addition to advancing a positive training experience for trainees in medicine at Fraser Health, the Medical Director will seek opportunities to engage trainees in Fraser Health organizational priorities and will seek to address the impact at Fraser Health of changes to training programs, including competency based medical education, distributed teaching, and shift in trainee allocations. In addition to supporting trainees, preceptors and program leadership in alignment with Fraser Health's strategic goals, the Medical Director of Medical Education will serve as Co-chair of the Joint Initiatives Steering Committee, ensuring successful integration of Simon Fraser University School of Medicine clinical learning experiences within Fraser Health, and health authority liaison to the centralized Resident Employment Office being developed at Vancouver Coastal Health, ensuring that Fraser Health's obligations to employee Resident Doctors are met, including matters relating to health authority policies and regulated employer responsibilities (i.e. health and safety, respectful workplace, and other obligations under related employment agreements).

Reporting Relationship

The Medical Director of Medical Education is accountable to and reports to the Vice President of Medicine, Fraser Health, and works closely with the Executive Medical Directors in Medical Affairs and Executive Director, Learning Strategies. Performance shall be reviewed annually with the VP Medicine and will include a peer review and/or 360 type of process.

Major Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership
  • Provide visionary leadership, oversight and consultation to all Fraser-based postgraduate medical education programs, particularly in areas of health authority responsibility, ensuring adherence to accreditation standards.
  • Develop strategic goals for advancing medical education at Fraser Health, aligned with the organization’s broader clinical training/learning strategy, in collaboration with health authority leadership.
  • Collaborates with leaders from the UBC Faculty of Medicine and SFU School of Medicine, and internal Fraser Health medical staff leadership to determine annual postgraduate expansion priorities and supports the VP Medicine in alignment discussions with the Ministry of Health.
  • Represents the Fraser Health VP Medicine portfolio at senior advisory and/or decision-making bodies such as the Joint Initiatives Steering Committee, Resident Allocation Subcommittee, Core-Med committee, Shared Learning Environment Advisory Committee (SLEAC), committees focused on Resident Doctors collective agreement, and other committees at the discretion of the VP Medicine including playing a supportive role at Joint Advisory Committees.
