About the RoleThis Network Technologist role provides on-site support across the Surrey and Vancouver campuses, with responsibilities evenly split between the two locations. The position follows established processes and procedures of the Network Operations Centre (NOC) team based at the Burnaby campus. The Network Technologist installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and resolves issues related to network hardware supporting services for the SFU community and external clients.
Acting as a second-level support resource, the role manages tickets related to data communication across a large institutional network, including wired and wireless infrastructure, servers, voice and security systems, and remote environments. Responsibilities include conducting network tests, configuring switches and routers, modifying network configurations, and supporting the organization and monitoring of network and data centre infrastructure.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and a technically adept professional with strong foundations in networking, troubleshooting, and operational support. Demonstrates excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve issues in complex campus and data centre environments. Possesses excellent knowledge of network infrastructure, Wi‑Fi technologies, network monitoring tools, and structured network cabling. Maintains a proactive, hands-on approach and follows established procedures with precision.
Communicates effectively and collaborates well within team environments. Adaptable and dependable, with a strong commitment to service reliability, safety, and continuous improvement in a fast-paced operational setting.
Two years of post-secondary education in Computing Science or Computing Technology, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification, Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Foundation Certificate, NORDX IBDN-700 Certificate or equivalent. Completion of low energy wiring program and certification (Worker Qualification Certificate 'LO')(Low Energy Systems), Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MSCA) or equivalent. 5 years of directly related experience in a large Data Center environment and/or large Network environment.
An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.
- Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and customer service skills.
- Excellent knowledge of Network Operating systems and IP Network Topology.
- Excellent organizational, analytical reasoning, problem-solving, and diagnostic skills.
- Demonstrated ability to perform physical work and use hand tools in a hands‑on environment.
- Excellent knowledge of ITSM principles
