Reports to: Senior Manager, Clinical Operations and Services

Shift Timings: 07:00 am - 07:00 pm

Compensation: $41.42-$55.91

Organizational Status: The Phoenix Society is a multi-service agency located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia dedicated to providing accessible services and opportunities to people who face barriers related to addiction, mental health, housing, education, criminal justice involvement and/or employment.

Job Summary
  • Administer medication and document their effects.
  • Collect specimens.
  • Monitor and document patient progress.
  • Assist on-site GP with administration and patient care.
  • Diagnose health conditions.
  • Treat and manage acute mental health conditions.
  • Treat and manage health issues.
  • Order and interpret screening and diagnostic tests.
  • Coordinating care services for clients, planning client care.
  • Developing professional relationships with clients and others.
  • Documenting timely, accurate reports.
  • Recommending or administering some medications (e.g., Schedule III drugs).
  • Refer clients to other healthcare professionals and specialists.
  • Provide counselling and education.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing with a bachelor's Degree and current practising registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • 1 to 3 years of experience providing trauma‑informed acute or community health nursing care/services to patients who have a combination of physical, psychiatric and/or concurrent substance abuse/misuse disorders, or equivalent.
  • A combination of equivalent education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of COWS, CIWA, and MMSE Tools.
  • Knowledge of OATS.
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of Tuberculosis Screening form is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of Employee Immunization Record form is required.
  • First Aid 1 and Current CPR certificate are required.
  • Valid driver's licence is required.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Develop therapeutic nurse & resident relationship.
  • Respond immediately and appropriately to sudden emergencies.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients and their families, colleagues, physicians, and other health care providers, both one‑on‑one and in groups.
  • Ability to lead and co‑lead group sessions.
  • Manage aggressive and suicidal behaviour.
  • Plan and implement care plans.
  • Assess patient responses to care and respond appropriately.
  • Adjust to unexpected events, problem‑solve, set priorities and deal with conflict.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Teach clients and their families.
  • Computer skills, including the ability to effectively use a computerized patient care information system.
  • Adhere to legal requirements of RN/RPN practising and scope as dictated through BCCNP.
  • Medication administration in keeping with Licensed Facility requirements.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning working collaboratively to develop and implement plans.
  • Work with on‑site GP and help develop care plans for individuals when needed.
  • Assess resident’s health literacy and knowledge providing information and access to resources.
  • Maintain resident confidentiality and respond to resident rights to health care information.
  • Document using internal documentation tools as well as requirements under legislation, regulation, by‑laws and policies applicable to RN/RPNs’.
  • Excellent knowledge of community health nursing theory including mental health and addictions, communicable diseases, primary care and practice within a patient/family‑centred approach.
  • Excellent knowledge of BCCNM's Standards for Nursing Practice.
  • Excellent knowledge of the BC Mental Health Act, other facilities and community resources.
  • Good knowledge of facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution techniques.
