Job SummaryWe are currently hiring for a Relief Part Time Registered Nurse, Surgery to join our Operating Room team at Surrey Memorial Hospital located in Surrey, B.C. This position is available until approximately July 2027 or until the return of the incumbent.
Detailed OverviewIn accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Registered Nurse (RN), O.R. provides direct nursing care to patients within the Operating Room (OR) according to established standards and administrative policies and procedures. Assesses patients' physical and psycho-social needs; identifies problems, plans, implements, documents, evaluates and coordinates the nursing care of assigned patients and performs scrubbing and circulating duties.
Responsibilities- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care of patients. Identify actual or potential problems, plan interventions, perform planned interventions and evaluate outcomes.
- Receive and admit patients to the OR. Coordinate and provide nursing care to patients according to physician and anesthetist orders and in conformance with established standards and hospital policies. Set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to appropriate staff.
- Participate in identifying and reducing risk factors that may impact the patient and/or health care team. Act as an advocate to protect and promote the patient's right to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity and access to information.
- Modify care as needs change. Initiate immediate treatment, such as applying non‑invasive monitoring devices if required.
- Obtain, check, set up and position supplies, instruments and equipment required for surgery ensuring that instruments and equipment are in working order. Report instruments/equipment in need of repair.
- Follow standardized count policy and provide appropriate documentation.
- Perform scrub and circulation duties within the OR according to prescribed procedures and protocols.
- Collect information from a variety of sources using skills of observation, communication and physical assessment to enable the provision of appropriate nursing care.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and research by identifying patient care issues and collecting data.
- Participate as an active member on nursing and hospital committees and councils for improvement of patient care and/or work environment.
- Participate in the orientation and ongoing education of nursing staff and students by providing information and acting as a preceptor and mentor as appropriate.
- Participate in the evaluation of patient care programs, techniques, standards and procedures by providing feedback about effectiveness and patient care outcomes.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, families and staff by adhering to established safety and emergency practices and procedures.

Education and Experience: Graduation from an approved School of Nursing. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). One (1) year’s recent relevant clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area, and completion of post graduate coursework and/or certification applicable to the designated clinical area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
