We are currently hiring for a Casual Registered Nurse, Surgical Services - Inpatient to join our Medicine team at Surrey Memorial Hospital located in Surrey, B.C.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patients and collect information from a variety of sources using observation, communication, data review and physical assessment skills. Make a nursing diagnosis of the patient’s condition and determine whether the condition can be improved or resolved by an appropriate nursing intervention. Plan, perform and evaluate nursing interventions and care.
  • Collaborate with patients and their families/caregivers in developing the care plan and encourage family participation in the development, implementation and ongoing modification of the care plan. Establish a therapeutic relationship by demonstrating empathy, trust and respect, advocating for the patient’s rights to privacy, dignity and access to information, and ensuring the patient’s choice and autonomy in decision‑making and care planning.
  • Participate in the care and discharge planning process for patients on admission by ensuring the care plan is established and implemented effectively, updating the care plan and intervening as appropriate, collaborating with the interprofessional care team to ensure comprehensive care planning and delivery, and collaborating and communicating with the Patient Care Coordinator on issues that will affect the care/discharge plan.
  • Coordinate nursing care for the patient; set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to support staff, and make referrals to the interprofessional care team according to established protocols and practice standards.
  • Receive and prepare patients for testing by receiving requisitions from physicians, reviewing patients’ case history, correlating clinical history with examination to be performed, assessing the nature of the issue to determine a process for testing, explaining procedures to patients, and monitoring patients’ comfort level to ensure the patient is at ease while obtaining required results.
  • Perform non‑invasive diagnostic tests on the vascular system by positioning patient, performing resting and exercise ankle‑brachial indexes, toe‑brachial indexes, thoracic outlet testing, and operating continuous wave Doppler and/or plethysmography equipment. Perform Transcutaneous Oxygen Measurement (TCOM) by operating the transcutaneous oxygen machine. Assess test results, record findings, submit results and summary to physicians for review, reporting and authorization.
  • Collaborate with members of the interprofessional care team including Physicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Coordinator, Clinical Nurse Educators, and other health care professionals/providers in the identification and resolution of issues, adjustments to care plans as required, and in regard to changes in patient condition.
  • Teach patients and families/caregivers about illness prevention, health restoration and health maintenance to help patients accomplish their health‑care goals. Assess learning needs of the patient and family/caregiver; provide information and demonstration of care activities to support self‑care and the discharge plan.
  • Plan and discuss referral information with patient and their families/caregivers and, in collaboration with members of the interprofessional care team, initiate referrals to appropriate health care/community agencies.
  • Document assessments, nursing diagnosis, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes/evaluations, and referrals according to practice standards and Fraser Health procedures.
