Job Summary

The Director/Manager-BC Biocontainment (BC BTC) directs a casual Registered Nurse position within the BC BTC Team at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The role supports the BC Biocontainment Treatment and Training Center’s mission to maintain readiness to care for patients with emerging high consequence infectious diseases (HCID) and new emerging pathogens.

Location:

Surrey Memorial Hospital, Surrey, BC. The position is casual and based out of Surrey.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assesses patients, collects information from multiple sources, and infers a nursing diagnosis identifying whether the condition can be improved by nursing intervention.
  • Plans, performs, and evaluates nursing interventions and care.
  • Collaborates with patients and their families/caregivers to develop, implement, and modify care plans, encouraging family participation.
  • Establishes therapeutic relationships through empathy, trust, respect, and advocacy for patient rights.
  • Participates in the admission, care‑ and discharge‑planning process, ensuring plan establishment, effective implementation, and communication with the interprofessional care team.
  • Coordinates nursing care, sets priorities, delegates tasks, and makes referrals to the interprofessional team according to protocols.
  • Collaborates with physicians, licensed practical nurses, patient‑care coordinator, clinical nurse educators, and other health‑care professionals to resolve issues and adapt care plans.
  • Teaches patients and families/caregivers about illness prevention, health restoration, and health maintenance, and adapts teaching to learning needs.
  • Plans and discusses referral information with patients and families/caregivers and, with team members, initiates referrals to appropriate health‑care/community agencies.
  • Documents assessment, nursing diagnosis, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes, and referrals following practice standards.
  • Participates in nursing committees, care conferences, and councils as assigned.
  • Engages in research and quality‑improvement activities, collecting data and proposing corrective actions.
  • Attends in‑services and educational programs; maintains up‑to‑date clinical competence.
  • Pre‑establishes and mentors new nursing staff and students, providing demonstration and orientation support.
  • Provides feedback to the manager about effectiveness of patient‑care programs, policies, procedures, and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an approved School of Nursing and registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of applicable graduate coursework or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).

  • Perform initial and ongoing patient assessment and provide technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families/caregivers, the public, medical staff, and the interprofessional team using verbal, written, and electronic means.
  • Promote person‑centered care, demonstrating empathy and sensitivity to cultural diversity and advocating patient rights.
  • Integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to solve problems.
  • Teach essential health topics to patients and families/caregivers.
  • Organize, prioritize, and delegate work responsibilities.
  • Collaborate and promote cooperation among the interprofessional team.
  • Use factual information, prior learning, and evidence‑based practice to support nursing decisions.
  • Operate relevant equipment and computer applications.
  • Maintain physical ability to perform position duties.
