Salary range:
The salary range for this position is CAD $49.20 - $67.08 / hour.
The RN Clinical Mentor functions as an experienced clinical mentor, resource, and champion in the delivery of high‑quality client care. Working closely with Nurse Educators and interprofessional team leaders, the Clinical Mentor provides rapid, elbow‑to‑elbow clinical mentorship and practice support to nurses and other team members within the Medicine program. This role plays a key leadership function in supporting staff learning, professional development, and clinical practice excellence through mentorship, role modelling, and direct clinical support at the point of care.
Responsibilities- Act as a clinical mentor, resource, and advisor to nursing staff, providing expert guidance in nursing practice and clinical decision-making.
- Deliver real‑time, elbow‑to‑elbow clinical mentorship and practice support in collaboration with Nurse Educators.
- Provide formal and informal clinical instruction, supporting staff training, onboarding, and ongoing development.
- Mentor nursing staff to enhance clinical skills, confidence, and competence while supporting program and practice initiatives.
- Collaborate with interprofessional team leaders to establish and prioritize individual and team learning needs.
- Assess learning needs through direct observation, discussion with staff, competency assessments, practice changes, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Identify learning opportunities, determine required resources, and deliver effective mentorship and education support.
- Facilitate staff learning by role‑modeling best practice nursing skills and professional competencies.
- Observe staff during client care, intervening as needed to demonstrate appropriate care delivery and promote evidence‑based practice.
- Provide timely feedback to ensure care aligns with program standards, standards of practice, and clinical practice guidelines.
- Support nurses in applying nursing processes and professional practice standards through hands‑on guidance and on‑the‑job learning experiences.
- Observe and evaluate clinical practice to identify training, education, and development opportunities.
- Collaborates with interprofessional team leaders to establish priorities for nurse and team learning, based on assessments of learning needs, discussions, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Facilitates staff learning and development by role‑modeling best practice nursing skills, answering questions related to client care, and assisting with problem‑solving.
- Provides clinical guidance and on‑the‑job learning experiences for nurses in the application of nursing processes and practice standards, and evaluates practice to identify opportunities for training and development.
- Collaborates with and supports clinical education by contributing to the determination of skill development priorities for staff; supports preceptors/preceptees and mentors/mentees using teaching and learning principles as required.
- Provides continuous mentoring and coaching to facilitate performance improvement; assists nursing staff with critical thinking when patients experience variances to clinical guidelines/pathways and plans, prioritizes, implements, and evaluates nursing interventions.
- Provides leadership in continuous quality improvement activities by utilizing evidence‑informed research to promote client/patient care based on the best practice.
- Ensures a protected and healthy workplace for clients/patients and staff through effective promotion of safe work practices and enforcement of health and safety requirements. Reports unsafe situations, investigates, and takes corrective action and/or notifies appropriate personnel.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Three (3) years of recent Acute Care, Community Health, or Long‑Term Care experience, relevant to the Medicine clinical area.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring nursing staff.
- Completion of leadership training or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
