Job Summary

The RN Clinical Mentor - Inpatient Medicine functions as an experienced clinical mentor, resource, and champion in the delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centred care. Working collaboratively with Nurse Educators and interprofessional leaders, the Clinical Mentor provides rapid, elbow‑to‑elbow clinical mentorship and practice support to nursing staff across Inpatient Medicine units. This role plays a key leadership function in advancing clinical excellence by supporting staff skill development, strengthening clinical practice, and promoting safe, evidence‑based care through hands‑on mentorship and role modeling.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a clinical mentor, advisor, and resource to nursing staff, supporting best practices in Inpatient Medicine nursing care.
  • Provide real‑time, elbow‑to‑elbow clinical mentorship and practice support in collaboration with Nurse Educators.
  • Deliver formal and informal clinical instruction to support staff training, onboarding, and ongoing professional development.
  • Take on a leadership role in mentoring staff to enhance clinical skills, confidence, and clinical judgment.
  • Support and contribute to clinical practice initiatives aligned with program, professional, and organizational priorities.
  • Collaborate with interprofessional team leaders to identify and prioritize individual and team learning needs.
  • Assess learning needs through observation, collaboration with staff and educators, competency assessments, practice changes, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Identify required resources and learning opportunities and provide targeted mentorship support.
  • Facilitate staff learning by role modelling best practice nursing skills and related professional competencies.
  • Promote clinical decision‑making by answering questions related to patient care and supporting problem‑solving at the point of care.
  • Observe staff providing patient care and intervene as needed to demonstrate appropriate, evidence‑based care delivery.
  • Provide constructive feedback to ensure care aligns with program standards, standards of practice, and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Support nurses in the application of nursing processes and practice standards through hands‑on, on‑the‑job learning experiences.
  • Observe and evaluate clinical practice to identify training, education, and development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with interprofessional team leaders to establish priorities for nurse and team learning, based on assessments of individual and team learning needs.
  • Facilitate staff learning and development by role modelling best practice nursing skills and related competencies.
  • Provide clinical guidance, support and on‑the‑job learning experiences for nurses in the application of nursing processes and practice standards.
  • Collaborate with and support clinical education by contributing to the determination of skill development priorities for staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and experience, and provide continuous mentoring and coaching to facilitate performance improvement.
  • Provide leadership in continuous quality improvement activities by utilizing evidence‑informed research to promote care based on best practice.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy workplace for clients and staff through effective promotion of safe work practices and enforcement of health and safety requirements.
  • Report unsafe situations; investigate and take corrective action and/or notify appropriate personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent nursing experience in Acute Care, Community Health, or Long Term Care relevant to Inpatient Medicine.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring nursing staff.
  • Leadership training or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle may be required.
  • Confirm you are legally entitled to work in Canada.
