Overview
Vertex is seeking an Intermediate to Senior Environmental Scientist with biophysical and commercial consulting experience to join the Commercial and Urban Development team in the Lower Mainland, BC.
In this leadership role, you will oversee multidisciplinary environmental projects, ensure technical excellence, and guide the growth of Vertex’s biophysical and commercial practice in British Columbia.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage biophysical and commercial environmental projects, including vegetation, soils, wetlands, wildlife, fisheries, and aquatic assessments.
- Provide strategic, commercially aware recommendations to clients.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulators, Indigenous communities, and stakeholders.
- Recruit, mentor, and support junior and intermediate team members to support the growth of the Urban Development team in the Biophysical discipline.
- Ensure technical quality and consistency of deliverables through senior review and QA/QC.
- Provide technical leadership to project teams and assist in staff development through coaching and training.
- Oversee project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and reporting to ensure delivery of cost-effective, high-quality outcomes.
- Support the growth of Vertex’s presence in the BC market.
- Contribute to business development by identifying opportunities, preparing proposals, and supporting client growth initiatives.
Candidate Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
- 7-10+ years of environmental consulting experience, with a strong background in biophysical sciences and commercial/urban development projects.
- Proven experience in technical team leadership, staff mentoring, and QA/QC oversight.
- Strong track record of managing complex projects, budgets, schedules, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated experience with regulatory permitting, environmental assessments, and field study design.
- Knowledge of municipal, provincial, and federal environmental legislation and permitting processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to lead discussions with clients, regulators, and Indigenous Nations.
- Professional designation in BC (e.g., R.P.Bio., PAg., P.Geo.) or equivalent.
- Valid BC driver’s license and willingness to travel for fieldwork when required.
- Business development experience (e.g., preparing proposals, identifying opportunities, supporting client growth) is an asset.
LOCATION:
Surrey, British Columbia. This position will be both field and office-based.
