Overview
BTC is a small college with big ambitions. We're seeking new governors to help lead our successful college into the next stage of our journey providing learner excellence; investing in our people; and creating a future-ready college.
What difference will you make?
As a college governor, you are instrumental in ensuring that every decision made has current and future students at its heart. You will bring your own skills and experiences to offer support and challenge to the college management team to ensure that all students receive the best standard of teaching, learning and guidance that enables them to fulfil their ambitions in work or future study.
Governors are at the centre of driving our inclusive and responsive culture. Many of our 16-18 year old students arrive at college having not achieved well them, gaining a qualification that will equip them for the world of work is a significant achievement. For some of our adult learners, including those with English as a Second Language, the college experience is about lifelong learning and second chances.
BTC is also one of the largest providers of Post 16 SEND education in Surrey.
Our governors are also our ambassadors, representing the college to the local community and businesses. BTC enjoys successful partnerships with other education providers, Councils and employers and we encourage our governors to get involved in external collaborative opportunities.
What we are looking forFirst and foremost our governors must have a passion for the role of further education in improving the life chances of young people and adults from all backgrounds. We believe that the best Board is a diverse Board so encourage applications from everyone. To fill existing skills gaps, we are particularly looking for people with the professional experience in the following areas
- Finance and audit
- Professional education
- Local business
BTC's Board of Governors consists of 18 governors, 13 of whom are recruited externally to provide the skills and independent scrutiny that the College needs.
BTC is entering a new era, having recently been taken out of government 'intervention' and received Department for Education endorsement as a successful 'standalone' college. We are partway through an exciting estate redevelopment scheme to provide the modern learning facilities that our students need. We are seeing a real growth in our popularity, with more applications each year. We pride ourselves on our inclusive culture and are proud to support all of our students, regardless of background or abiility, to achieve the qualifications that they need to progress to their chosen career or the next stage in their academic journey.
Governors work closely with the Principal/CEO and Executive Team to drive the College's mission, values and strategy. College governors have a specific responsibility for safeguarding public funds, and ensuring that all our students experience the highest quality teaching and learning in a safe and inclusive environment.
Governors also get involved in college life, attending student events, celebrations and acting as ambassadors. For many, meeting students to hear about the impact that the college makes to their lives is the most enjoyable and meaningful part of the role.
