Job Purpose

To apply psychological theory, research and evidence-based practice to improve outcomes for children and young people aged 0-25. Working collaboratively with families, schools, early years settings, colleges and multi-agency partners, the Educational Psychologist supports inclusion, learning, emotional wellbeing and positive development, ensuring children and young people achieve their potential.

Key Responsibilities

Undertake psychological assessments of children and young people experiencing learning, developmental, behavioural, social or emotional difficulties.
Prepare clear, evidence-based psychological advice for Education, Health and Care (EHC) Needs Assessments and Annual Reviews in accordance with the Children and Families Act 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice.
Deliver consultations with parents, carers, schools and other professionals to identify strengths, needs and appropriate interventions.
Design and implement evidence-based interventions to support learning, behaviour, mental health and wellbeing.
Provide advice and training to schools, educational settings and partner agencies on inclusive practice, child development and psychological approaches.
Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including health, social care and education professionals.
Support schools in developing inclusive environments and effective strategies for meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Contribute to early intervention and preventative work to improve outcomes for vulnerable children and young people.
Maintain accurate records, reports and case documentation in line with professional standards, confidentiality requirements and council policies.
Keep up to date with current psychological research, legislation and best practice, contributing to service development and quality improvement.
Participate in supervision, continuing professional development (CPD) and peer support activities.
Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of professional practice.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

Doctorate in Educational Psychology (or recognised equivalent).
Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist.
Eligibility to work as an Educational Psychologist within the UK.

Essential Knowledge and Experience

Knowledge of child development, learning, cognition and psychological assessment.
Understanding of SEND legislation, including the Children and Families Act 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice.

Experience of writing high-quality psychological advice and reports.
Experience working collaboratively with schools, families and multi-agency professionals.
Knowledge of safeguarding legislation and responsibilities.
Ability to apply psychological theory to practical educational contexts.

Ability to build positive relationships with children, families and professionals.
Effective time management and organisational skills.
Ability to work independently while contributing positively within a team.

Based within Surrey with travel across schools, educational settings and community locations.
Hybrid working may be available in line with council policies.
Enhanced DBS clearance is required.
