Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurse

Epsom and St Helier Hospitals have an exciting opportunity that has arisen for a registered nurse with a keen interest and passion in the field of Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) / Gastroenterology to join the St Helier Hospital team delivering care to patients with IBD.

You will have the support of the existing Clinical Nurse Specialists and the wider clinical team. Regular in-house teaching and external conferences will support your knowledge. This role offers development as a newly appointed clinical nurse specialist, with face-to-face and remote care focusing on medication management and patient symptoms in line with specialist immunological therapies.

The post holder will provide specialist nursing care to patients and their families, act as a resource for other professionals, implement clinical guidelines and standards, and support the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job
  • Assist the Clinical Nurse Specialist in IBD in coordinating care for patients at the Trust.
  • Support patient reviews by undertaking assessment including physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and advanced health needs assessment on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
  • Become an educational resource for patients and families, signposting to specialist advice and education on IBD management.
  • Administer and closely monitor all patients receiving long-term drug treatment, including anti-TNF.
  • Participate in urgent helpline services for IBD patients and promote participation in the IBD patient panel team.
  • Contribute to the IBD biologics and benign multidisciplinary team.
  • Undertake national audit under the guidance of the Lead IBD CNS.
Person specification Education and qualification – Essential
  • Registered first level nurse with a nursing degree or willingness to undertake.
  • Current UK NMC registration.
  • Evidence of post- registration education.
Education and qualification – Desirable
  • Counselling course or module.
Experience – Essential
  • Experience of working with gastroenterology patients.
  • Experience in actively participating multidisciplinary team.
  • Venepuncture and cannulation skills.
Experience – Desirable
  • Experience in managing biologic drug.
  • Experience in biologic drug infusion.
Knowledge & skills – Essential
  • Ability to coordinate IBD pathways.
  • Good knowledge of IBD drugs and side effects.
  • Evidence of ability to work independently.
Knowledge & skills – Desirable
  • Counselling skills.
  • Willingness to prepare and present presentations to the IBD team, including patient groups.

Salary

£45,953 to £54,254 a year, inclusive of HCAS.
