Qualifications License and Certification

Must hold or be eligible for a valid certificate in school psychology. National Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) certification preferred.

Education

Completion of a state-approved certification preparation program in school psychology at the specialist degree level or higher, or completion of a master's degree plus 60 graduate semester hours/90 quarter hours of school psychology coursework from a NASP-approved program.

Experience

Completion of a successful year's internship in conjunction with public schools following degree conferral is required. Three years of experience as a school psychologist is preferred.

Skills

Knowledge of psycho-educational assessments; ability to consult with administrators, teachers, and parents; knowledge of principles of learning and behavior, special education laws and regulations; provision of in-service training; crisis intervention; effective communication skills; organizational and problem-solving abilities; multitasking; and human relations skills.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive psycho-educational assessments for students referred through local school SSTs or special education, and consult regularly with educators and parents on intervention development.
  • Select and administer appropriate, non-discriminatory tests to diverse student populations.
  • Review test data to provide instructional recommendations.
  • Participate as key members of SSTs to support the Department of Special Education and Psychological Services.
  • Contribute to eligibility and re-evaluation teams to determine students' need for special education services.
  • Assist school personnel during crises and provide counseling to referred students.
  • Conduct and attend in-service training and presentations for staff, parents, and faculties.
  • Develop written reports of assessments for documentation.
  • Contribute to departmental process improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Physical Demands

    Requires prolonged sitting, talking, hearing, standing, walking, and the use of hands for handling objects. May require occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, and depth perception. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.
