Position Purpose

- Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to maximize the learning experience of students with special needs by implementing district approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, and providing a safe learning environment.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct assessments and diagnostic examinations of students to identify learning issues and recommend courses of action.
  • Participate in PPTs and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Assist students and staff in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies and organizations as needed.
  • Coordinate with administrators and other staff to ascertain individual student needs.
  • Serve as a resource to students and parents to provide counseling for personal growth and behavioral management.
  • Acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping and provide student information as required.
  • Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication.
  • Assist in the orientation of new teachers and provide in-service training.
  • Select and requisition appropriate educational materials and maintain inventory records.
  • Additional Duties

    - Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other administrators.

    Equipment

    - Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, and telephones.

    Travel Requirements

    - Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

    Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

  • Knowledge of Special Education principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education.
  • Ability to use computer systems and applications.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation for professional growth.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships.
  • Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

    - Works in standard office and school building environments.

    Qualifications Profile

    Certification/License:

    • State Certification as a Special Education Teacher.
    • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

    Education:

    • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
    • Masters Degree in Special Education.

    Experience:

    - Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
