In this role, you will advise DVSA on compliance with privacy legislation, in particular the Data Protection Act 2018, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other data privacy legislation and to ensure that relevant policy and procedure is in place and implemented to enable compliance. This includes internally within DVSA and externally, for example within our supply chain or other organisation through data protection clauses within contracts and data sharing agreements.
You will also ensure that DVSA’s staff are well informed about the requirements of data protection law, and in conjunction with other team members ensure that staff have an understanding of the law and other relevant legislation, requirements and guidance. To promote best practice in the handling/use of personal data within DVSA.

Job description
In this role, you’ll advise DVSA colleagues, the supply chain and other organisations on processing personal data and sensitive personal data to ensure that it is done so in line with data protection and data privacy law. This will involve considering risks to individuals’ data and what measures can be put in place to reduce these risks.
Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:
1. Provide assistance to information asset owners on carrying out data protection impact assessments, approving the data protection compliance check and making risk based recommendations.
2. Provide assistance to information asset owners on the creation of privacy notices and data sharing agreements to ensure compliance with legislation.
3. Respond to rights requests and Freedom of Information internal reviews.
4. Manage any data protection incidents – assessing impact to individuals and notifying relevant parties.
5. Provide data protection advice and guidance to all parts of DVSA, external organisations and the supply chain.
6. Support Commercial colleagues and Contract Managers in ensuring data protection clauses are embedded within contracts.
7. Provide training and guidance on data protection law to DVSA colleagues and other stakeholders.
8. Manage data protection compliance throughout DVSA by carrying out assessments against the Information Commissioner’s Accountability Framework.
9. Work with Traffic Commissioners and others to ensure data protection compliance taking into account data controller and data processor relationship.

Person specification
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:
* High quality communication and drafting skills
* Able to negotiate with senior staff and external organisations, such as other government departments, supply chain and private sector
* Understanding of data protection legislation and how to interpret it
* Experience of working in a data protection environment with application of data protection law and considerable experience of supporting DPIAs and providing advice and guidance on data sharing or data processing within the supply chain.

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements
Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.
Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.
