Join the Texas State Technical College as a CDL Trainer. This role focuses on providing both classroom and behind‑the‑wheel instruction to prepare students for their written and practical Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) examinations.

Job Description

The CDL Trainer delivers comprehensive classroom and practical instruction, ensuring students master vehicle operation, pre‑trip inspections, shifting techniques, coupling/uncoupling procedures, and defensive driving strategies. Trainers also maintain training materials, assess student progress, administer CDL skills tests, and may be required to travel between training locations.

Essential Functions
  • Instruction & Training: Deliver classroom and behind‑the‑wheel lessons for CDL and endorsement preparation.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Safety: Teach state and federal regulations, FMCSA guidelines, hours of service, hazardous materials handling, load securement, and overall safety protocols.
  • Student Evaluation: Conduct written exams, practical road tests, provide timely feedback, and maintain accurate performance records.
  • Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance: Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, ensuring DOT compliance and safe operation.
  • Risk Management: Enforce safety protocols and conduct risk assessments to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Curriculum Enhancement: Integrate real‑world scenarios, simulation training, and updated industry methodologies; continuously improve course content.
  • Record‑keeping & Compliance: Maintain training logs, maintenance records, and certification documentation in compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders; respond to inquiries promptly.
  • Program Development: Participate in curriculum development, committee meetings, and program improvement initiatives.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with CDL training standards and obtain required certifications within six months of hire.
  • Travel & Multi‑Site Support: Provide instruction across multiple training locations as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Class A CDL license with Passenger, Air Brakes, and Hazmat endorsements.
  • DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Two years of commercial driving experience.
  • One year of technical skills in vehicle operation and maintenance.
  • Clean driving record; no major accidents in the last three years.
  • Education is valued but not mandatory; relevant professional experience counts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching or training experience, or expertise in conducting both written and practical CDL exams.
  • Clean driving record; no major accidents in the last five years.
  • Knowledge of higher education and workforce development landscape.
  • Experience developing non‑credit curricula and short‑term credit programs.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks described in the work environment section.
