Job Goal

Responsible for assisting teachers with personal care, safety, behavioral needs and classroom activities for special education children.

Qualifications
  • Ability to read and write in order to communicate and receive instruction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
  • First Aid Training
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
  • Arizona IVP Fingerprint card
  • TB test
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Food Handlers Card
Performance Responsibilities
  • Monitors progress and assignments under teacher direction.
  • Monitors children’s behaviors inside and outside classroom.
  • Assists with clean-up and other related tasks following daily activities.
  • Prepares classroom for activities, including organizing assignments and preparing homework folders.
  • Creates bulletin boards, maintains materials and supplies, contacts parents and may make copies.
  • May attend in-service training sessions.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Positions assigned to various programs may include:
    • Emotionally Disabled and Alternative Education Programs: assist with level system, behavioral intervention plans, monitoring during social skills groups, and inclusion activities.
    • Mildly, Moderately and Severely Mentally Retarded Programs: assist with personal care, activities of daily living, functional communication, assistive technology and related objectives, inclusion opportunities, behavioral management, and life-skill development.
    • Severe Language Delayed Program: assist with functional communication, inclusion, language development activities, and behavioral management.
    • Health Impaired children: support personal care, physical assistance, goals/objectives as directed, and behavioral management.
    • Early Childhood Special

      Education:

      assist with personal care, activities of daily living, functional communication, assistive technology, inclusion opportunities, behavioral management, and life-skill development.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county and city statutes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable Cartwright School District and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Early Childhood Development
  • Communication and interpersonal skills suitable for interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and for receiving work direction.
  • Basic reading, writing and mathematical skills.
  • Basic safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Monitoring and redirecting children.
  • Monitoring and assisting children with activities under teacher supervision.
Physical Requirements
  • Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to blood and other body fluids.
  • Medium Work:
    Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
