Description

To assist Instructional staff in providing a well‑organized, smoothly functioning learning environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program.

Qualifications
  • Certification:
    Required – Valid Illinois Professional Educator’s, Paraprofessional, or Substitute License registered in Lake County
  • Education:

    Required – High School Diploma or Equivalent and 60 credit hours of college credit
  • Experience:
    • Required – Spanish fluency
    • Preferred – Spanish‑fluency with prior classroom experience
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by staff.
  • Assist staff in devising and implementing special strategies based on individual students’ needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Assist staff in implementing behavioral strategies for individual students and with students in crisis.
  • Accompany students to specials, mainstreaming, and/or exploratory classes to facilitate full participation under the direction of staff and consistent with the student’s IEP (where applicable).
  • Administer, score, and record achievement and diagnostic tests as staff recommends for individual students.
  • Assist with equipment, technology, and augmentative communication devices used with students as directed by the IEP or staff.
  • Assist students with completion of instructional assignments, distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials, correct papers, supervise testing and makeup work, guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by staff.
  • Check and record student attendance as necessary, assist in data collection, and record student performance as requested by staff.
  • Assist with the supervision of students throughout the school day, including during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, transitions to other classes, lunch/recess, field trips, and community outings.
  • Assist students with daily living skills such as dressing, undressing, lunch, snack, clean‑up routines, toileting, washing routines, and specialized equipment.
  • Alert staff to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality about students, functioning as a mandated reporter.
  • Assist with student movement throughout the day as directed by special education staff and/or administration.
  • Paraprofessionals are non‑teaching personnel who may be used for:
    • Non‑teaching duties not requiring instructional judgment or evaluation of pupils.
    • Supervising study halls, long‑distance teaching reception areas used incident to instructional programs transmitted by electronic media, and detention and discipline areas.
    • Assisting with academic programs under a certificated teacher’s immediate supervision.
    • Providing specialized instruction in fields they are particularly qualified in due to their knowledge or skills under a certificated teacher’s direction.
  • Based on student or school needs, the substitute paraprofessional may be temporarily or permanently reassigned.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as assigned by the staff, principal, supervisor, director, or other administrator.
