Professor of Solid‑State Materials

The Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) at ETH Zurich and the PSI Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences (CNM,) at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen invite applications for a joint professorship in Solid‑State Materials.

The new professor will lead, in a joint appointment with ETH Zurich, the Laboratory for Multiscale Materials eXperiments (LMX) in CNM, benefit ting from access to PSI’s large‑scale experimental facilities and analytical infrastructure (Swiss spallation neutron source SINQ, Swiss muon source SµS, Swiss light source SLS, and the Swiss free electron laser SwissFEL).

An excellent international record of research accomplishments in materials discovery, advanced structural characterization, electronic materials, quantum materials, 2D materials and their applications in electronics and optoelectronics is anticipated.

Research programmes may include design, synthesis, characterization and applications of solid‑state inorganic materials across scales from bulk crystals to thin films, heterostructures, and 2D materials, driving discovery of novel materials for quantum technologies, neuromorphic computing, energy harvesting, and optoelectronics. Characterization methods may include X‑ray, scattering, total and diffuse scattering, advanced solid‑state NMR, and electronic and spin spectroscopy using neutron and muon spin‑rotation techniques.

Synergies with PSI facilities and the European Spallation Source are highly welcomed.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Laboratory for Multiscale Materials eXperiments (LMX) in CNM.
  • Develop and maintain a world‑class research programme in solid‑state materials.
  • Lead design, synthesis, characterization and application of solid‑state inorganic materials.
  • Utilize PSI's facilities (SINQ, SµS, SLS, SwissFEL) and collaborate with external facilities.
  • Provide leadership, support, and mentorship to existing research groups and the broader LMX community.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary research bridging inorganic chemistry, condensed‑matter physics, and materials science.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a related field.
  • Strong international record in research on materials discovery, advanced structural characterization, electronic and quantum materials, and 2D materials.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing large research groups or units.
  • Clear commitment to student education and training.
Teaching

The professor will teach at undergraduate levels (German or English) and graduate levels (English), and will be responsible for curriculum development and student supervision.
