Research Scientist in Machine Perception (80-100%)

Position is under the supervision of the Research Team Manager – Sensing & Analytics.

Your role and responsibilities

As a Research Scientist, you will be working on sensing solutions for ABB’s next generation systems and products. The role is hybrid (#LI-hybrid). You will work within a highly motivated, international team of scientists at ABB Research and have many opportunities to grow your career.

You will be mainly accountable for the following:

  • Contributing to and leading research projects in sensing and machine perception addressing the needs of our businesses, with applications including process automation, process industries, port automation, or maritime transport.
  • Developing novel, high-value sensing products and solutions from the concept definition phase to experimental verification alongside multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Evaluating new technologies and conducting technical surveys, generating project proposals with business impact, and collaborating with researchers and engineers from other research centres, ABB business units, and universities.
  • Disseminating results through scientific publications and internal technical reports, and generating intellectual property.
Qualifications for the role
  • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Strong background in machine perception and computer vision.
  • Expertise in machine learning, reinforcement learning, sensor fusion, or digital signal processing is an advantage.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., C/C++) and familiar with the Linux ecosystem.
  • Hands‑on experience with sensing hardware and software frameworks for cameras, LIDAR, or radar (e.g., OpenCV, ROS2) is a plus.
  • Proven publication track record at top scientific conferences and journals.
  • Team‑player attitude, willingness to learn new industrial applications, and ability to work on a broad range of technologies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
